Meeting your online friends in real life is usually a stress-inducing endeavor. You never know if you’re being catfished or pig butchered. Often, the spark that’s present in your Discord and gaming chats doesn’t translate to the real world. But it’s not always an HP-draining experience. Sometimes you get a very, very subarashii freedom (you’re an SSR-level otaku if you got that) experience. Niichi’s Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! manga is one of those stories, and come 2027, we’ll see it as an anime!

Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! Deets
Niichi writes and illustrates the Riaru mo Tama ni wa Uso o Tsuku manga. He originally released the manga as a self-published work on his Twitter and Pixiv in 2018. Chukei Publishing (via Kadokawa) licensed the web manga and began releasing Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! in tankoubon volumes under their comic label, Kitora. Kadokawa will release the manga’s ninth volume in September. J-Novel publishes the manga in English.
One of my favorite facts about Riaru mo Tama ni wa Uso o Tsuku is that it only exists because Niichi-sensei couldn’t finish one doujin he was working on. So, he started another one, and after releasing Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! as a one-shot doujin, its reception made him continue the story.
Kadokawa has released multiple comic videos with Shun Horie voicing Kaoru and Nanami Yamashita voicing Nanami.
But What’s It About?
Like most dudes, Kaoru Terazaki uses a female skin in online video games. Unlike most dudes, Kaoru-kun is extremely self-conscious about it. So, when the time comes for him to IRL meet his gaming buddy, Nanami Osaka, that trait causes issues. Issues that compound when he discovers that Nanami is a girl, and she wants to introduce him to her overprotective parents! And to solve his dilemma, Kaoru-kun decides that the only acceptable response is… cross-dressing!
