Warning: This article will discuss the events up through episode seven of Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, so there will be spoilers.
One series that I have enjoyed unexpectedly is the space drama titled Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, produced by Arvo Animation and streamed internationally by Funimation. In the first half of the series, we meet a young cosmonaut in training named Lev in a country that’s not unlike the former USSR. While all his friends are training to become the first person in space, Lev has been chosen for a special assignment instead.
His new assignment is to train and basically babysit a young vampire girl codenamed N44 (though she is given the name Irina to make things easier), who will be the first humanoid creature sent into space. Their mission is to make sure that it’s safe to send up an actual person in order to win the space race and cold war that the country is currently embroiled in.
In the first seven episodes, Lev and Irina work hard to achieve their goal and actually manage to succeed in episode seven. The problem is what comes next? The government has already said that they have no intention of letting N44 live now that her mission is complete. Will we have to say goodbye to the communist vampire that we’ve grown to love?
With that said, Bandai Namco has uploaded a full-length promotional video that highlights some of what is coming our way in the second half.
Based on my rudimentary level of Japanese and the visual cues that I was given in that promotional video, I think it’s safe to say that Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, will attempt to pull at our heartstrings for the rest of the season. Whether they can stick the landing is still up in the air, but I have confidence in this one giving us a satisfying conclusion.
