This. It’s stories like this that make me happy to be doing the work that I do because this is the kind of thing that makes me feel tingly happy in my tum-tum.
In an announcement that hit the internet on Monday, September 5th, the staff behind the beloved manga turned anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride announced that the patience of fans has been rewarded and a second anime season is in production. It will air in April 2023!
As an additional treat, the announcement further revealed that besides a different production studio, the cast and crew are remaining the same from the first season that was produced by WIT Studio back in 2017. Taking over the animation production duties is the newly established Studio Kafka which was created in March 2021, specifically to handle the animation for this series. You might recall that they were the studio (along with Twin Engine) that handled the recent OAD series titled The Ancient Magus’ Bride – The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm.
Originally a manga created by Kore Yamazaki, The Ancient Magus’ Bride made its debut in November 2013 and has been serialized regularly up through the present day. In Japan, the manga series is up to seventeen volumes as of March 2022 while publisher Seven Seas has released fifteen volumes in English as of October 2021.
The plot of The Ancient Magus’ Bride follows a teenage girl named Chise who has lived a terrible life leading up to where she was abandoned by everyone she knew and cast out of society because of her ability to interact with spirits and other magical creatures. Feeling as though she has no choice left to her, she enters herself into a special auction to be sold as a piece of property. Unexpectedly, though, the man who purchases her is a famous ancient magus with an animal skull for a head who intends to not only train her to be his apprentice but eventually his bride.
