Starting as a light novel series in July 2011 created by Tsutomu Satō, the series was first adapted into an anime series in April 2014 and was directed by Manabu Ono and animated by famed studio Madhouse. The first television season ran until late September of that year and then disappeared into the mist of anime history until 2017, when a brand new movie with an original story from the series creator was released to Japanese theaters. The movie was produced by studio Eight Bit and features Risako Yoshida as director.
For a long time, fans were concerned that this would be the last anime for the series that they would see but that changed in October 2019, when a second season was formally announced at the Dengeki Bunko Aki no Namahōsō Festival. It has since been revealed that the primary cast and crew from the movie will return to reprise their roles for the second television season.
The light novel series did not see a license announcement in the west until March 2015, when Yen Press revealed via social media that they were planning to release the novels. They describe the story of The Irregular at Magic High School as:
The year is 2095. Magic has been tamed as another form of technology, and the practice of magic is now a rigorous discipline. Brother and sister Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba are just about to start their first year at the renowned First Magic High School of Japan. But the school’s ironclad rules mean that the brilliant Miyuki enters the prestigious Course 1, while her older brother, Tatsuya, is relegated to Course 2 — and that’s just the beginning of their troubles!
