Have you ever been a healer class, unit, etc. in a video game? Even for those who enjoy playing healers, it can be a frustrating and thankless ordeal. From newbs begging for free healing, your teammates blaming their losses on your skill timers, the lack of skill options making it almost impossible to progress through a game as a single-player, and getting knocked out by enemies constantly due to low defense and health points, the cons of being a healer seem endless. What if you could change that? What if you could become a healer strong enough to defeat a demon king? Would you be satisfied with that power? Or would you choose to take revenge? With Redo of Healer, we see at least one healer attempt to get his cake and eat it too.
Redo of Healer (Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi) by Rui Tsukiyo, is a light novel series that follows a healer named KeYaru, who, in the tradition of many healers in an adventurer’s party, tends to get the short end of the staff from most people he meets. KeYaru perseveres and becomes a great healer, even defeating the Demon King singlehandedly. However, this massive success is not enough for KeYaru, who uses his powers to go back in time to the beginning of his journey to take revenge on those that wronged him.
With the light novel being a major success in Japan with over 800,000 copies printed, an anime adaptation is in the works. Big names are up for working on the anime, with TNK headlining production, Takuya Asaoka of Kandagawa Jet Girls directing, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) as series composite writer, and Junji Goto (High School DxD) as character designer.
For those not into the idea of revenge fantasy, there’ll most likely be no shortage of fanservice to keep people interested, if these light novel covers are anything to go by.
While the series has yet to be translated into English, the plot is surely novel enough to have more than a few people interested. For everyone else, this is just a reminder that we should probably be nicer to our in-game healers. Just in case.
