Masters of the Universe: Revelation has had some shade thrown at it since it launched on Netflix last week. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen so far, but the reboot throws one truth into the harsh rays of the spotlight: nostalgia-glasses are always rose-tinted. Luckily, the annual My Famicase Exhibition brings us retro game fans the nostalgia we never had.
This year’s exhibition, like those before, features fictional game cartridge art for the old NES game system, known as the Famicom (Family Computer) in Japan. Artists from around the world invented game concepts, fictional game studios, and more to bring pocket-sized artworks to the world.
You can see all the entries for this year’s My Famicase Exhibition on their website, which also hosts the archive of all the exhibitions since 2005. The exhibition is hosted by Super Meteor, and the walk-in exhibition ended in May (not that anyone could really go though).
Make the Fantasy a Reality
Itch.io hosts loads of game jams, but my favorite has to be the A Game By Its Cover annual game jam, which focuses on turning the exhibits from the My Famicase Exhibition into real, playable games. The jam will happen this August, but I’ll let them tell you more about it:
You can find out more about the A Game By Its Cover 2021 game jam on Itch.io. Be sure to check back near the end of August to enjoy some free games and their creative take on those cartridges.
Do you have a favorite cover? Is there a game you’d love to see become a real thing? Are you making a game for the jam? Let us know, in the comments below.
