Well, everyone, it’s officially September. If you’re a fan of the spookiest season, then there’s no doubt you’re already out and about planning your costume, picking up a few (or many) new decor pieces to decorate in and around your home, or just spending the weekend browsing your nearest Halloween pop-up store.
For those looking to spend the bulk of their spooky season indoors, you may be figuring out your perfect horror-themed movie and/or TV show playlist to queue up all season long. Along with everyone’s old favorites, a fine bumper crop of new shows and movies usually rise up to make fans scream with glee. One such new offering is Mieruko-chan, a horror-comedy series that’ll begin streaming on Funimation on October 3rd.
Animated by studio Passione and directed by Yuki Ogawa (Miru Tights, Interspecies Reviewers), the series walks us through the everyday life of Miko Yotsuwa, a young girl that can see creatures others can’t. While other stories would have Miko be the kind of protagonist that gets pulled into some sort of battle against the forces of good and evil or have her end the (potential) suffering of the beings she sees, her plan is to ignore them for as long as she possibly can.
Which makes the key visual for the series even more hilarious.
You see, it’s obvious that Miko’s friends Hana and Yulia are focused on the fortune teller in front of them, but the added bonus of knowing Miko is desperately ignoring the unidentifiable creature (ghost? yokai?) behind her makes it even funnier. You know that thing is most likely dying to be acknowledged, but no dice from Miko.
Given the number of crew members working on this series after working on Interspecies Reviewers, there’s a good chance the show will be full of ridiculously funny visual gags. Along with Yuki Ogawa, Makoto Uno will be character designer and Takahiro Majima will be co-director. To be fair, the show could be terrible, but it’ll most definitely be meme-able.
Yen Press currently licenses the Mieruko-chan manga in English, and the first three volumes are available now in bookstores. There’s no word on how much of the manga the anime will actually cover, so your best bet is to get caught up before the show premieres. Happy Haunting!
