This is news that I think we all expected to hear eventually but it still stings.
In a blog entry posted to the official Violet Evergarden website, it was revealed that the movie that was scheduled to be released on January 10th, 2020 will be postponed indefinitely for obvious reasons. In the blog entry, the staff behind the movie apologized for the delay. The entry was posted on September 6th which was the same day that the spinoff movie Violet Evergarden: Spin-Off – Eternity and Auto Memory Doll was released to theaters in Japan (which was finished a single day before the arson attack which left 35 Kyoto Animation staffers dead). This is obviously sad news for the many fans of the television series but hopefully, fans around the world will be understanding of the delay.
Violet Evergarden started as a light novel series penned by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase which was entered into the annual Kyoto Animation awards where it took home the grand prize in 2014. It was the first entry to ever be awarded the grand prize in any category. The thirteen-episode anime adaptation premiered in January 2018 with animation produced by Kyoto Animation. Taichi Ishidate served as director and scripts were written by Reiko Yoshida.
The series was streamed worldwide by Netflix who describes the story as:
The war is over, and Violet Evergarden needs a job. Scarred and emotionless, she takes a job as a letter writer to understand herself and her past.
