Passione and Hayabusa Film are going back to school for this new anime series. Passione alone is no stranger to high school settings, from High School DxD Hero to Yuri Is My Job!. This series isn’t quite that fantastical, but grounded and real, especially for people who got bullied back in school. The cute anime girl with pink hair (who looks like Yuna from Kage Kara Mamoru!) makes it all better. Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up (Kusunoki-san wa Kōkō Debut ni Shippai Shite Iru / Kusunoki-san Failed Her High School Debut) is about two loners working hard to make friends and have happy high school lives, and we wish them well.

Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up News, Cast, Staff
High school will be welcoming its new students sometime in the future. Midori Yui is pulling double time as both writer and director, Koji Haneda designed these troublesome high school students, and Hyadain is here with those sweet anime songs.
The two star-crossed classmates are as follows:
- Keisuke Shizuki — Yuto Uemura (Amajiki Tamaki from My Hero Academia). Keisuke is a levelheaded yet fearful high school student.
- Shizuka Kusunoki — Tomori Kusunoki (Makima from Chainsaw Man). Shizuka is a lonely yet popular high school student.
Passione and Hayabusa Film will animate the anime adaptation, which has an official website and Twitter (X) accounts promoting Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up and I’m Here to Help
This is one of those high school debut series where potentially awkward students struggle to fit in and find their place in a new setting. It’s a breath of fresh air after a ton of series with world-ending stakes. Here, it’s just a couple of high school students who don’t want to get bullied by other kids. The trailer nicely introduces these two classmates and highlights the distant bond that formed during middle school. They were both lonely nerds who found kinship after being shunned by their peers. They both cleaned themselves up for high school and excelled in different ways.
I like the contrast between their middle and high school selves; it shows just how hard they worked to clean up. We also see that their insides never really changed to match their outsides: Keisuke is still timid and easily pushed around, and Shizuka is still shy and intimidated by others. Their reformed bond could help to build their inner characters, which we look forward to seeing play out. Let’s just hope some other girl whose inside definitely doesn’t match her outside reappears to needle Keisuke’s emotional wounds. She definitely will, though.

Mitsuki Mii released the original Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up manga series on October 21st, 2022. Ichijinsha published seven volumes in Comic Pool.
