Here is shocking news if you love Black Butler, Madoka Magica, and Fate/Zero! Kalafina is reuniting for an anniversary show! On January 15th, at the Tokyo Garden Theater, the lead trio of the Kalafina will sing together for the first time in seven years. Their official Twitter/X account announced this after being inactive since 2018. The announcement came with the following statement:
Roughly translated, it means: “We have decided to hold Kalafina Anniversary LIVE 2025. Even with our solo careers, we’ve decided to sing as a trio again. There a still many people who cherish Kalafina. We look forward to seeing you all.” Signed by the three singers: Wakana, Keiko, and Hikaru.
The event details did not mention Kalafina founder and music composer Yuki Kajiura. Later the same day, Kajiura made a public statement on her X/Twitter account.
Regarding the concert, the first paragraph translates to:
“I’ve received some questions about the announced Kalafina concert but I have no involvement. I have not received any official notice or explanation from the organizers or any of the members of the group. Given the situation, I am unable to answer any questions. I’m sorry, but future questions regarding Kalafina should be directed to the organizers of the concert or Kalafina’s agency.”
Kajiura’s statement continues she had been trying to find time to compose new Kalafina music but now says it is no longer possible and that “they are walking different paths.” Kajiura also believes the trio has decided to create a “new Kalafina” without her and start fresh. Kalafina did not comment on Kajiura’s statement at the time of this article’s publication. Whether or not Kalafina plans to continue activity after the 2025 anniversary show is also unknown.
Kalafina disbanded in 2019, and each member began their solo careers. However, Keiko remained actively working alongside Yuki Kajiura as part of the FictionJunction group, which released their latest album in 2023. Keiko appeared on five tracks. Kalafina gained steady fame and appeal for its broad range of musical styles and dramatic harmonious melodies. They performed several beloved anime themes. Noteworthy songs include:
- “Magia” from Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- “Lacrimosa” from Black Butler
- “oblivious” from The Garden of Sinners
- “believe” from Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
Tickets for the Kalafina Anniversary LIVE 2025 show will first go on sale through Wakana’s and Keiko’s official fan clubs. Advanced agency sales will begin in early November.
Yuki Kajiura is a well-regarded composer in the music industry in Japan, particularly for anime and films. If you’ve ever enjoyed the soundtracks or theme music from about any Gundam series, LOVELESS, the Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel trilogy, Erased, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Sword Art Online, or Puella Magi Madoka Magica, then you have Kajiura to thank. In recent years, she collaborated and wrote songs for LiSA and Aimer. The latter performs several songs in the Fate/stay night franchise. Their most successful collaboration to date was the theme song for the second Heaven’s Feel movie, “I beg you.” This was Aimer’s first #1 hit on the Oricon single charts. Funny enough, Kalafina never had a single peak higher than #4.
