The tale of two insomniacs who bond over being unable to sleep by stargazing, Insomniacs After School (Kimi wa Hokago Insomnia), is now being adapted into a live-action movie. We’ve previously discussed the anime adaptation and how good that is shaping up, so it’s safe to get your hopes up.
Unfortunately, the trailer posted to YouTube is region-blocked, so we’ll have to make do with the Twitter upload. The movie is set to premiere on June 23rd, 2023, so there’s not much longer of a wait anyway.

The Insomniacs After School movie, produced by United Productions, and distributed by Pony Canyon, has a promotional home page, an official Twitter page, and even an Instagram page for fans and potential viewers to follow for more updates. Extras, such as the poster seen below, can be found there.
Looking For Sleep in All the Wrong Places
For those new to the series, Insomniacs After School follows two unfortunate insomniacs, those who suffer from the common sleep disorder, as they try to get a good night’s sleep. Ganta Nakami (portrayed by Daiken Okudaira) has a muted response and attitude (due to a lack of proper sleep) toward his school peers, so he hasn’t made many friends. He intends to make a nest out of the abandoned astronomical observatory used by the former astronomy club.
There, he finds a girl with the same idea that he had, the friendly and carefree Isaki Magari (portrayed by Nana Mori). After an awkward encounter, the two bond over their shared problems and goal of finding a comfortable place to be. They then formulate a plan to revive the astronomy club, so they can use the club room. Otherwise, the school staff would kick them out, and, really, who wouldn’t want to sleep in an astronomical observatory, whether or not they had insomnia?
Insomniacs After School Origins
Insomniacs After School first began its sleepless nights in the manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Ojiro. Shogakukan began publishing the series in its Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine on May 20th, 2019, and has since released twelve volumes.
There is an anime adaptation of the series we previously discussed in depth.
If you have not only looked up at the stars at night in awe but also wondered if space battles are going on, we have also done that and looked to anime for inspiration. The DIEBUSTER Blu-ray Box Standard Edition should leave you in just as much awe as the actual celestial bodies.
Are you looking forward to this live-action adaptation of Insomniacs After School? Do you have hopes that it’ll be faithful to the source material? Do you think Netflix and Hollywood should stop trying to fail at what Japan typically succeeds in doing? Let us know in the comments below.
