Ever since I read the masterpiece that’s My Wife Is a Man, I’ve welcomed well-made otokonoko stories with the warmest of joys. So, it’s with the softest of smiles I can tell you all that Azuna Banjo’s I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl (Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata) is getting an anime! Unfortunately, that’s all I can tell you. The adaptation announcement was the equivalent of the Holy Light — it said everything, yet showed nothing.
So, What’s I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl About?
Do you remember that scene in season two of My Dress-Up Darling when they’re in the karaoke booth, and Nowa is channeling her inner Rob Halford? Remember that the takeaway from that was that it’s okay for dudes to do/love makeup? Add some bro-loving to that, and that’s basically what I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl is about.
Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata follows Kenshiro Mido, a teenage dude who loves cosmetology. But like most dudes in his position, training in his passion is limited to occasionally doing his sisters’ makeup. But one day, Kenshiro’s best friend, Hiura, lets him practice his cosmetology skills on him, and the results were the equivalent of getting all the best characters in a single gacha roll. And as Hirua embraces femininity, he and Kenshiro discover there’s more to their relationship. Like a breakdown in a Knocked Loose song, love is coming.
Azusa Banjo released I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl as a Twitter manga titled Osananajimi (♂) o Onnanoko ni Shiteshimatta Hanashi in December 2019. Banjo-sensei planned to self-release the rom-com manga as a doujin, but in February 2020, Comic Pool (Ichijinsha) saw its popularity and said, “Get me that manga,” and that was that. Ichijinsha has compiled the manga into twelve tankobon volumes. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the English version of I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl digitally and in print.
