While those in the US will get to see IT: Part 2 on September 6th, Japan usually has to wait much longer for US releases to reach Japanese theaters. Accordingly, IT: The End, as it’s known in Japan, won’t be released until November 1st. Which gives just enough time for Japan to hype up the movie’s release during Halloween. And their character of choice to help them out? Why, Hello Kitty, of course! During Sanrio Puroland’s Halloween celebration, the park will have special photo backdrops as well as a special dessert commemorating the movie’s release.
While that seems strange, it isn’t the first time Hello Kitty’s decided to dress up as a horror movie villain for Halloween. It also isn’t the first time Sanrio Puroland has done a more adult-themed horror collab, as they’ve run a popular “Haunted Zombie Land” attraction during the Halloween season for the last four years. However, it is the first time we’ve seen Hello Kitty officially dress up as an American horror villain, outside of classic movie monsters or fanart. While I personally wish the collaboration was more elaborate, I do enjoy the fact that it’s happening to begin with. It’s nice to have a middle ground between both sides of Halloween fun, which tends to lean towards a kid-friendly, sugar-centric funfest, or a boozy gore and guts nightmare bacchanalia if you’re in the States.
Aside from the IT collaboration, this year’s Halloween theme is “Kawaii Masquerade”, with activities, food, and merchandise showcasing Hello Kitty and friends dressed to the nines for some Halloween fun. Also returning is SPOOKY PUMPKIN, their all-night adults-only concert series. Musical guests range from solo acts and idol groups to DJs and rappers. While Sanrio Puroland manages to have something for everyone, there’s only one question remaining. Will clowns ever be this cute again? I doubt it.
