Another unique magical girl series has arrived, and it hits hard. Gushing Over Magical Girls (Maho Shojo ni Akogarete or I admire magical girls, and…) is an apt title considering the content of the series. It’s little wonder that Asahi Production was chosen, considering they also animated Angel Blade Punish! from 2004 to 2005. This is a magical girl tale that focuses on an unexpected villain who really punishes her idols with love. We’ll see how things go in this magical yuri tale when it premieres on January 3rd, 2024. Until then, let’s enjoy the new trailer with scantily-clad villainesses.
Akihiro Ononaka first released his Gushing Over Magical Girls manga series on March 29th, 2019. Takeshobo has since published ten volumes in Storia Dash and Manga Life Storia.
Our villainess, and her three favorite magical girls, are as follows:
- Utena Hiiragi / Magia Baiser — Fuuka Izumi (Rin Rin from HIGHSPEED Étoile). A girl who idolizes magical girls. An evil familiar tricked her into becoming an evil magical girl. She’s secretly a sadist, so it worked out in the end.
- Haruka Hanabishi / Magia Magenta — Kaori Maeda (Nice Nature from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby). The pink drill-haired magical girl of Tres Magia. She is known for her kindness and pure-hearted nature.
- Sayo Minakami / Magia Azul — Mayuko Kazama (Yui Yashiya in Rokudo’s Bad Girls). A girl who acts as both a shrine maiden and a Tres Magia magical girl. She might secretly enjoy her run-ins with Magia Baiser.
- Kaoruko Tenkawa / Magia Sulfur — Misaki Ikeda (Minor character in Majo no Tabitabi). Despite her kind and wholesome persona, she is rough and potentially violent away from the public. She’s still a Tres Magia magical girl though.

Gushing Over Magical Girls During Tense Battles
Gushing Over Magical Girls initially presents a pretty standard magical girl series. Three girls use supernatural powers to battle the forces of evil. The main character starts off as just another fan watching the heroines of Tres Magia battle another demon sent by Enormeeta to conquer the world. Utena idolizes Magia Magenta, Magia Azul, and Magia Sulfur. She’s even bought a lot of merchandise to decorate her room with. Her dream of meeting Tres Magia seemed to be in sight when a mascot-like being approached her with an offer to become a magical girl.
Reality didn’t meet her expectations when Utena’s transformation turned her into a dark magical girl. Her costume is dark and very revealing. Unfortunately, Venalita blackmailed her with footage of her embarrassing transformation to keep her as a member of the dark organization. Things took a turn for the worse when Tres Magia appeared and mistook her for an evil being. Venalita compelled Utena into battle, which unlocked both her power and her sadistic tendencies. Yes, she still loves magical girls, but now she can really show her love.
