If you know me, you know that the Lunar JRPG series was a formative game of my childhood. If it hadn’t been for Lunar Silver Star and Lunar Eternal Blue, there’s no guarantee that I would be the same person I am today. For years, I have waxed nostalgic about this game series. It requires effort to encapsulate what makes these two games so magical without a modern release of either game, though. That changed a few days ago when GungHo Online Entertainment revealed plans to re-release both games in a remastered format on modern consoles in Spring 2025!
Lunar Silver Star and Lunar Eternal Blue was an RPG series that never got the chance to shine that it deserved. Final Fantasy dominated the video game market on the Super Nintendo when Game Arts released two games on the Sega console, followed by the Sony PlayStation. These earnest stories shared a tale of endless hope against darkness.
In the first game, our hero is Alex, a young boy who wants to grow up to become a Dragonmaster like his hero, Dyne. Setting out on an adventure with his best friends Ramus and Luna, they explore Lunar together. Eventually, they take on the dark, magical emperor on his mission to enslave the goddess Althena.
In Eternal Blue, the story picks up 1,000 years in the future with Hiro and a mysterious girl named Lucia. If you’ve never played these games but have only heard “oldtaku,” like me, speak of them with reverence, you owe it to yourself to see what the fuss is about.
Lunar Remastered — Breaking It Down!
GungHo Online makes big promises to the audience if we break down the press release. First, both games will ship in one package on all major consoles (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Steam, and Xbox) with new animation and dubbing. This is big because it indicates that Working Designs is no longer involved with the franchise, meaning gigantic changes. Fear not, however, because they revealed that one of the game’s key features will be the ability to play as they first presented it. Or, if you wish, you can play the remastered version with updated pixel art and cut scenes.
This is only the tip of the iceberg, though. Because the game also promises quality-of-life improvements. This includes the ability to speed through combat (which was one of the chief complaints of the original game). All this and more will be available to fans worldwide in Spring 2025. Stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more coverage of this game as more information becomes available.
