Unfortunately, no further details were revealed in the announcement but, as always, stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more information as they release it.
Created by Satoru Noda, Golden Kamuy first appeared in Weekly Young Jump magazine in August 2014. As mentioned in the introduction, the 29th volume of the manga was just released in Japan while Viz Media has released 25 volumes in English as of February 2022.
Upon the release of the first anime episode in April 2018, the manga series had five million copies in print. Since that time, the circulation has increased to eighteen million copies as of December 2021. Geno Studio produced the first three anime seasons, with Hitoshi Nanba serving as the director working off scripts written by Noboru Takagi. It’s also worth noting that, just like with the manga, the anime featured Hiroshi Nakagawa as a supervisor for the Ainu language sequences.
The recently announced fourth season will premiere in October 2022 with Brain’s Base replacing Geno Studio as the production house. Shizutaka Sugahara is credited as the chief director working off scripts written by the returning Noboru Takagi.
A period drama, Golden Kamuy takes place in Hokkaido during the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War. The main driving plot device is a story of a hidden cache of gold found by Ainu miners. One man was tasked with telling his comrades about the gold, but was captured before he could share the news. Tortured and watched, the man eventually tattoos various parts of a map on his fellow prisoners who were able to eventually escape from captivity.
The main character of the story is Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the war, who gets into a scuffle with a drunk old man who had told him the story about the gold. After a bear kills the man, Sugimoto finds a map tattooed across the torso of the stranger. Eventually realizing that the story is true, Sugimoto teams up with a young Ainu woman to search for the gold together.
