Fans of epic kaiju fight scenes rejoice! The legendary kaiju is back and not in chibi form! Gamera Rebirth is set to grace our screen on September 7th, 2023. The trailer alone should have people hyped for the premiere. A giant turtle is wrecking monsters straight from nightmares. Whether Gamera will be a guardian, or just another monster itching for a fight like Godzilla, remains to be seen.
Studio ENGI has published a home page to promote Gamera Rebirth and an official Twitter page. Additional behind-the-scenes information, as well as extras such as the key visuals, can be found there.
Rise, Mighty Gamera
Gamera Rebirth takes place during the Summer of 1989. Three sixth graders known as Boko (Hisako Kanemoto), Joe (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka), and Junichi (Aki Toyosaki) are trying to enjoy their last summer break as elementary school students. Their reverie is cut short when Brody (Subaru Kimura), the son of a US military commander, steals the money they had saved for their summer plans.
Afterward, the boys plot to retake their stolen funds. However, their plans are thwarted just as they’re about to act upon them. A massive kaiju known as Gyaos appears before them to attack Tokyo. Boko, Joe, Junichi, and Brody are frozen in pure fear. Just as all seemed lost, another kaiju appeared and began to fight Gyaos. Gamera had risen, and the “Summer of Kaiju” started. Gyaos would be one of a few world-ending creatures to threaten Tokyo, and Gamera would fight each and every one of them despite its wounds.
Gamera Rebirth Origins
Gamera was first created by Masaichi Nagata, Hidemasa Nagata, and Noriaki Yuasa. The first movie, Gamera, the Giant Monster (Daikaiju Gamera), was released on November 27th, 1965. The character and film were meant to directly compete with Toho’s Godzilla. His first appearance presented him as another vicious, larger-than-life monster. However, he did save a child in one instance. Later appearances saw Gamera as a protector, especially of children and nature.
The J-List shop has you well in hand if you prefer pocket-sized monsters. The Dialga & Palkia G.E.M. EX Series Figure from the Pokémon section is now available.
