Studio Eight Bit, known for its extensive roster of stellar anime, is back with a tale of cute heroines in dire situations. SHY tells the story of a heroine who is as emotionally fragile as she is powerful. However, her goal of helping people, and her fellow superpowered friends, gives her the strength to rise up. We’ll see how this cute heroine, who must be protected at all costs, fights against the forces of evil when the series premieres on October 2nd, 2023. Until then, let’s watch her work in the trailer below.
Artist and illustrator Bukimi Miki began working on the original manga series on August 1st, 2019. Akita Shoten has since published twenty volumes in the pages of Weekly Shonen Champion.
SHY’s world is defended by a number of great heroes. These are just a couple of them:
- Teru Momijiyama / Shy — Shino Shimoji (Narumi Someya in The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses) plays Teru, the titular shy heroine who represents Japan. Despite lacking in confidence, Teru has taken up her sister’s mantle to become a hero who saves people. She wields the power of fire.
- Pepesha Andranof / Spirits — Mamiko Noto (Haira in Otaku Elf) voices Pepesha, Russia’s hero representative. She is both Shy’s mentor and best friend. She wields the power of smoke.
- Uni Lord / Eunnie — Kikuko Inoue (Rosa in The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen) voices Uni Lord, the mysterious leader of the world’s heroes. Little is known about her, other than her role as a wise leader with a playful side. In fact, she prefers to be called Eunnie.
Fans and potential viewers can find out more about these heroines on the promotional home page, and the official Twitter page. There are a couple of key visuals to be found there.
Save the World With All Your Heart
The world of SHY is quite similar to My Hero Academia, in that superheroes are called upon to save the day. Heroes represent their home countries in their activities, and Japan’s newest hero is Shy, a girl with a very accurate name. Her first outing didn’t go so well. Shy’s first public appearance was met with a dull reaction, and her first civilian saved still suffered some injuries. The public blamed her for everything, and her heart was pitched into depression.
Heroes draw their power from their hearts, which react in kind with their Heart-Shift Bracelets which form their suits and manifest their powers. Shy is pulled out of her self-imposed isolation by her friend Spirits. Teru resumes her heroic activities just in time to help uncover a conspiracy by the villainous organization Amarariruku.
Eight Bit Brings More Heroes to Life
Studio Eight Bit is no stranger to the tales of heroes and villains. Former Satelight members founded the studio in 2008. Satelight animated great works such as Geneshaft, Heat Guy J, Noein, and Fairy Tail. It’s little wonder that Eight Bit is as good as they are.
Yasuhito Kikuchi directed their first foray into anime with Infinite Stratos on January 7th, 2011. These people came out swinging with superpowered waifus in a harem setting. Those looking for an idol series that isn’t as WTF as Oshi no Ko could find much to enjoy with If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die. The title is more dramatic than necessary. A girl really likes a less popular idol in a mid-tier idol group, and spends a lot on the idol’s merchandise to support her. The idol finds out and is worried about her fan overworking herself.
One of their newer works has seen an incredible amount of love and support. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has plenty of action, waifus, and a protagonist that’s so androgynous that anyone can really appreciate Rimuru.
Maybe Shy just needs some tips from a hero who isn’t exactly shy. Mirko, Mt. Lady, or Midnight, would be great but they’re not available right now. Ochaco is though. The Uraraka 1/8 KoneColle Figure Uniform Ver. from My Hero Academia is now available for purchase.
