On March 17th, Koei Tecmo Europe announced that the Atelier Ryza series had hit the impressive milestone of 1.6 million shipments worldwide. The tweet contains a cute little animation featuring Ryza and Klaudia, which we’ve linked below.
It’s difficult to say exactly what has propelled this series into the hands of so many players, but I would bet it has something to do with the appealing character designs. Ryza’s thighs have become a bit of a meme, and the developers have fully leaned into it. The long-running Atelier series has enjoyed success before, but Ryza has outsold them all by a wide margin. I personally haven’t played the series since the Atelier Ayesha games, but the series has many longtime fans despite being so niche. In 2020, the first Atelier Ryza game became the best-selling title in the series with just 420,000 in sales. To see this series sell so well makes me glad.

Developed by GUST, the Atelier series is known for its alchemy mechanics, laid-back atmosphere, humorous stories, and vibrant art style. With 24 titles under the series’ banner, it’s GUST’s longest-running franchise and their most successful. We even got some anime adaptations and manga at one point.
Ryza has long been a favorite of anime fans thanks to her thicc thighs, up there with 2B from Nier Automata and her now legendary butt. It’s not hard to see why, and perhaps those thighs are what helped bring this series to so many new players. The newest game in the series, Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key releases on March 24th, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. Both Atelier Ryza 1 and 2 are available now on those same consoles, with the exception of a native PS5 version.
