For those of you reading this article outside of Japan, have you already purchased your tickets to see Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night? I know I have! However, if you’re on the fence about buying tickets to see the movie that opened at number one at the Japanese box office a month ago, I have just the thing for you.
In order to keep the hype train rolling along ahead of the movie’s international premiere, Aniplex has uploaded three minutes worth of snippets from the movie. Think of it as an extended promotional video.
As you may have surmised from the above footage, this movie isn’t about “Lightning Flash” Asuna, a member of the Knights of the Blood Oath. This is about a young girl who has never played a video game before being trapped in a death game along with her best friend and trying to survive the first floor of this virtual dungeon of death.
The movie premiered in Japan in late October 2021 and, as of this writing, has earned over 1 billion yen. The United States and Canada premieres take place on December 3rd, while the Australia and New Zealand premiere will take place on December 9th. No word yet on when this film will see its premiere in the United Kingdom or Latin America.
This movie is easily going to go down as the highlight of my year. It’s the first movie I’ve seen in a theater in many years and I. Am. Pumped!
I’ve always been more of an Asuna fan than Kirito, so to finally see her story getting told (on an IMAX screen no less!) is nothing short of a blessing. It’s worth noting that they have also already announced a second movie titled Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Kuraki Yūyami no Scherzo (Scherzo of a Dark Dusk) which will open in theaters next year.
