Vermeil in Gold pushed the idea that Alto and Vermeil shared a destiny. Vermeil’s name means “gilded silver (or bronze).” Vermeil also refers to vermilion in classical literature, a bright red color. Now you know why Vermeil glows demonic red when she lets her horns and claws out. But demon mana has a gold color. Where is the silver that her mana will cover in golden color? It will come from Alto’s mana! Silver mana must have significance in the magic world. Otherwise, the authority figures wouldn’t keep remarking on it. I hope Alto’s exploration of Vermeil’s backstory will answer that question.

Vermeil is bored. Can’t she hang out with Sylpheed or Francois? Eating sweets will kill her boredom. Nertz! I wanted a different camera angle from Vermeil in Gold to see her frustration. Oh, man. I feel those standardized test nerves for Alto. Iolite has no nerves. He’s napping and distracting Alto!
Oh? Alto noticed that the Bronze Exam questions are more involved than past ones. He’s a test-taking king. He must have practiced by taking old tests. Guh, I hated that crap. Uh oh. Iolite is the test-taking intergalactic deity of Vermeil in Gold! Ack. Iolite doesn’t care who else finishes the test because they won’t anyway. Whoa. These test proctors know who the terrorists are. And Blammo! Iolite used a horse-type golem inside the cathedral in the past. Now he’s riding a castle golem. Does Iolite have a chessboard full of familiars? Or is the chessboard the magical familiar?
From taking the SATs to watching shounen battle anime, let’s go, Vermeil in Gold! Ew. Iolite called Alto a “demon master.” His relationship with Vermeil is much kinkier than that. The implication that test proctors need to be military officers is disturbing. What the heck happens during these Bronze, Silver, and Gold exams? Ouch. Lt. MacKenzer of the manly hair didn’t need that arm anyway. As well we know, Alto is a quick study. He deduced that Iolite helped Obsidian harm Vermeil. Enemy noted.
Proctor-Colonel Phalanx and Vermeil join the fray. Vermeil in Gold is a battle academy anime now! Iolite is, allegedly, the Platinum Square that scored perfect marks on the Bronze, Silver, and Gold exams. Iolite’s reputation does the heavy lifting of foreshadowing. Phalanx says that Iolite stole his golem-creating ability from God’s power to create life. Yes, Iolite. You are the baddie.
Vermeil in Gold shounen battle academy fight, phase two! Iolite’s buddy Heliodor won’t let anyone interfere. The busty witch knows how to play with portals. Man, I loved that Portal game. Iolite’s castle cannons pack a punch. I cringe at wood damage during a battle because those splinters should act like a shrapnel mine. Uh oh. Iolite made a tactical mistake because he provoked Alto by hurting Vermeil. Iolite claims that golden mana belongs to demons. Huh. Alto’s silver mana crystal attacks broke through Iolite’s castle bricks. Alto glows vermeil, gilded silver!
Whoa! That’s Iolite’s horsie thing he used to kill the priests in the cathedral from the seventh episode of Vermeil in Gold. From Rook to Knight? Ugh. In the last episode, I realized that Iolite is a boring character. He confirmed it with his own words in this episode. I’m still curious about why his Platinum Square colleagues signed on to his world destruction plan. Whoa! Vermeil let out more demon power. Chains! Where did they come from? Oh. Iolite has anti-demon magic spells. He forcibly locked down Vermeil’s Saiyan mode.
Argh. Deus ex machina. At least we had foreshadowing before a miracle happened in Vermeil in Gold. The lady in Vermeil’s book is protective. She is the Mage of Beginnings. Is she the patron saint of magic? Does the statue in the chapel portray her? I have an ominous feeling about Elena chopping that statue’s head off. Ah. The mage’s apparition says that Vermeil asked to be sealed in the book. Eh? Battle timeout for a flashback? Lots of keys floating around Vermeil. I’m with Iolite. What the heck is going on here? Oh, no worries. The magical trip into Vermeil’s past won’t cost any time in the external world.
Aw. Look at the cute little Vermeil 550 years ago. Next episode, we’ll learn how Vermeil became “The Strongest Scourge.”
