Glenn asks the cyclops blacksmiths and young, shy Memé to make surgical tools tough enough to handle dragon scales.
Case 10 – “The Self-Deprecating Cyclops”
Hmm.
I noticed the cute cyclops girl in Monster Girl Doctor’s first episode and expected her to join Glenn’s harem at some point. Here we are at almost the end of the season, and my expectation came true. Memé is adorable! That name is funny because, in Japanese, it’s like saying “eye” twice (目, め, me – eye) when she only has one. I liked her character design and personality too. She’s the clumsy girl type because she lacks depth perception. She’s a cyclops, after all! It was also nice to connect the medical emergency of the episode to her monster characteristics because of the eye’s connection to inner ear canals and balance.
Monster Girl Doctor did an interesting thing with the cyclopes’ faces. They all had one eyebrow, which makes sense, but it’s half of one on the left with a crease on the right. A major difference between anime and Western animation style is the emphasis on eyes to convey emotion while cartoons use the whole face, especially the mouth. When we have a whole race of monsters with one big eye, it’s difficult to show if a cyclops is mad or sad, because we don’t know what the slant on the eyebrow means. Monster Girl Doctor found a nice solution.
Unsurprisingly, Monster Girl Doctor relied on mythology to portray cyclopes as blacksmith specialists. In Greek mythology, three cyclops brothers forged Zeus’s thunderbolts. Later, those cyclopes joined Hephaestus at his forge, crafting signature weapons for the Olympian gods. This is good for the audience because the cyclopean reputation as weaponsmiths amplifies Skadi’s role in convincing the cyclopes in Lindworm to make life-saving medical tools instead of life taking weapons after the great human-monster war ended. Skadi’s visit to the cyclops workshop made a big impression on a young Memé, which again connects to all the other monster girls finding new modes of living during peacetime.
Heh.
Skadi still believes the disease taking her life is her fate. That monster girl will need much convincing otherwise. Glenn visits the cyclops workshop. Aw. Memé the cyclops girl is shy, jumpy, and not used to seeing two eyes. Memé is quite imaginative about her perceived shortcomings. Nice. She wears a fundoshi. She can’t get married to anyone but Glenn now. That doesn’t seem so bad.
Glenn needs a special order of surgical tools from the cyclopes to handle tough dragon scales. Skadi is a tough monster girl on the outside and the inside. He’ll need a lot of them because they’ll wear out quickly. The problem will be the needles for suturing. They also need to be strong enough for dragon tissue but still be small and thin. The cyclops boss thinks Memé can handle making the needles. Memé could write short stories with how detailed her failure scenarios are. She’s like Arahnia in not wanting to take the blame if Skadi’s surgery fails.
Haha! Arahnia does have her own nurse uniform. Practicing sutures on Kunai is a good idea. Kunai explains how Skadi feels her mission of making peace between monsters and humans is complete because of how much Lindworm has grown as a city. Arahnia knows how to deal with difficult monster girls and repeating the same argument might harden her heart. Glenn has a knack for getting into a monster girl’s heart through the backdoor. Arahnia may have confessed something about herself…
Cthulhy’s tentacle gnawing is a big deal. She even wants Glenn to have a nibble. On her tentacle. Tentacle tip! Oh, man. Cthulhy just lopped off her tentacle tip! They grow back quick. Look at the tip squirm. This is good octopus stuff. The dragon monster girl surgical tools are ready except for the needles. Memé is still working on it. Nice to see monster girl medical school is like a regular medical school. I like Cthulhy’s confident flirting style. Ooh. Memé got an inspiration.
Uh oh. Here’s the dramatic medical emergency of the episode. Expectedly, Memé suffered an accident so Glenn can perform his accidental monster girl sexy time. Unleash the cyclops chest! Flashback to younger Memé surrounded by buff, muscular cyclopes. Memé remembers Skadi’s inspiring words about cyclopes turning from weaponsmiths to artisanal metalsmiths for medical instruments. From taking lives to saving lives. It’s why making needles for Skadi is so important.
Memé wakes up in Glenn’s clinic. How is she going to react when she sees her wide-open shirt? Glenn doesn’t need to hear comments from the jealous monster girl peanut gallery. Oh hoho. Glenn needs to marry Memé now, since he’s seen her underwear and her chest. Sapphee didn’t hear about that first part! Ah haha! Arahnia makes hobby clothes for Memé. I want to see a cyclops monster girl in a Gothic Lolita outfit.
Memé has motion sickness which cyclopes are predisposed to getting. She’s been looking at some spinning things in the workshop. It’s a hint to how she’s going to make the needles for Skadi’s surgery. Look at that machine. She’s making strong wire and then stamping them into sturdy needles. Fun. Memé likes to get close when she’s confident about something. Now she just needs to keep her head up all the time, so she doesn’t run into anything. Compliments are sexual harassment! Glenn’s monster girl whispering won’t work on her! Uh, it’s already too late for Memé.
The big job for Glenn now is to convince Skadi to undergo the surgery. This is more like monster girl counseling instead of doctoring. What is that bag strap? Sapphee gave it to him, but a dragon lady might not like it. Dragon scale? Eh, the preview makes things anticlimactic since they show the surgeons at work.
Monster Girl Doctor streams on Crunchyroll.
