Following the Monogatari anime adaptation of Nisioisin’s light novels about girls who become oddities, curiosities, apparitions, and aberrations through psychological fixations and supernatural forces has never been easy. SHAFT creatively adapted the series into anime form through monologues, meta film allusions, and background music. And head tilts. Don’t forget the head tilts. Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season brings us back to the Bakemonogatari traditions from 2009.
Koyomi Araragi (Ararararagi-kun… I messed up) finished his role in the Monogatari Series in 2017 after he graduated from high school and left for college with his formidable girlfriend, Hitagi Senjougahara. A three-part movie (Kizumonogatari) showed us how Kiss-shot Acerola-Orion Heart-under-Blade (Shinobu Oshino) brought Araragi into the shadow realm of the supernatural. Bakemono are real, but hybrids that arose from modern neurosis need eradication. It’s better to be a full vampire than a half-vampire by oddity specialists’ calculations. But after Araragi’s origin movie, anime producers spread the stories of the heroines he saved in a scattershot fashion. Thankfully, Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season collects the epilogue stories of our favorite monster girls, Yotsugi Ononoki, Nadeko Sengoku, Tsukihi Araragi, Mayoi Hachikuji, and Suruga Kanbaru into one place.
Is there anything different? What’s the same? How can I watch this without Araragi-kun inappropriately playing with his surrogate little sisters? Read on for answers!
SHAFT Head Tilts and Monologues in Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season
Throughout all the Monogatari Series incarnations, the signature adaptation choice for the exposition-heavy light novels was the lead character’s introductory monologues for each episode. That usually meant the rapid-fire explanation from Araragi-kun matched the concept of the day to a monster girl’s traits. In Off & Monster Season, the monster girls provide the monologues, but it felt like I had traveled back in time. The beats, rhythm, background animations, and music felt so familiar. If anything, the new electronica music’s engineered samples sound better.
Even each character’s signature monologue move returns to the Monogatari spinoff. Yotsugi Ononoki, a reanimated zombie doll, still spins in a perfect circle and does an idol “peace, peace” pose whenever she can. It felt like coming home.
Off & Monster Season Brings the Comedic Meta Pop Culture References
Another hallmark of the Monogatari Series derived from the rapid-fire manic dialogue between characters following the Manzai comedy style. Each pun or joke reaction had versions of the characters in historic manga and anime styles. In the first episode, Tsukihi Araragi, one of the fire sisters of justice, accepted Ononoki’s fabricated tale that she was a magical girl who came to earth to battle an evil monster. The mix of stylized violence and seizure-inducing screens continues in 2024 with how SHAFT produces mania in Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season.
Continuity is Good, But What About Fanservice?
Mayoi Hachikuji, kami~mashita (has arrived, became a god). Our lost snail ghost became the local benevolent deity and takes her job seriously! Accidental slug monsters are no match for Mayoi’s side-ways logical problem-solving. Gods are beyond comprehension! Mayoi’s exorcism and how she returned to Ararararagi-kun (I messed up) is my favorite story of his adoptive little sisters. And Araragi often visits Ononoki to reward her for watching over his phoenix-monster sister. Paying her in “Häppy-Ice-Cream” so he can see another little sister is also his reward. Araragi-kun is an incidental character in Off & Monster Season. But that raises a concern: who will flip skirts, brush teeth, and lather body parts in lascivious ways?
2024 occupies a different time than 2009-2017. The Monogatari Series spinoff can offer sketchy upskirt angles, so I doubt we’ll see the sexy lingerie scenes we had in the original incarnations. These stories focus on Araragi’s younger little sisters, not his competitive harem members. Sadness. However, the almost-dead spirit of moe can live on in Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season.
