Episode 1 — “The Elf of the Forest”
Anime used to receive title translations hilariously far off the mark from the original Japanese in the recent past. The currently airing Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Arc (Netflix) is a reboot of anime that came to America 40 years ago as Ultimate Muscle. Astro Boy’s Japanese title is Mighty Atom. Let’s not belabor the cut-and-paste version of Macross that combined three separate series under the American title Robotech. Anime has a long history of changing titles to what distributors think will attract English-speaking audiences. So, I’m only slightly surprised that Elf-san wa Yaserarenai (エルフさんは痩せられない。 Miss Elf Can’t Lose Weight, Elf can’t be on a diet) received the positive-sounding title Plus-Sized Elf.
The main gripe is that Miss Elf wants to lose weight and is not a spokes-elf for the body-positivity movement. That counts as a win if Hidive can fool the fat acceptance crowd with a bait-and-switch about the anime before the second episode. Elias, the studio behind the manga adaptation, should be proud of its eleven-minute production. Yes, Plus-Sized Elf is a short-form anime. And it’s uncensored ecchi anime!
Meet the Plus-Sized Elf and her Thicc-Bodied Companions
Right off the bat, you must know that this anime leaves all the lithe waifs at home in the elven parallel world. Even when our main character loses enough weight to return to her world, she looks like she packs enough protein on her bones without the greasy goodness of french fries. Every girl in Plus-Sized Elf brings more cushion for the pushin’.
The director of the Smiley Boar chiropractic salon, Akiho Ino (Aya Uchida, Kotori Minami from Love Live!), operates the central setting for thicc visitors from another world to work on their plump problem areas. But she pushes most of the work onto her male subordinate. Lucky him! The official website character notes read like they came from osteopath Tomoatsu Naoe’s (Takahide Ishii, Kubi Houtai Senpai from Vampire Dormitory) patient files. Plus (heh), all the monster girls from another world spell their names with the phonetic spellings of Japanese kanji.
Thicc Elves
Elfuda, 絵留札, E-Ru-Fuda (Ayasa Itou, Arisa Ichigaya from BanG Dream!) — Our plus-sized elf from a parallel world likes french fries, nature, video games, and manga but hates meat, fish, coffee, and swimming. Her hobbies include collecting potato goods and woodworking. Elfuda’s problem area is her belly, and she needs to be cautious around french fries.
Kuroeda, 黒枝, Kuro-Eda (Rena Hasegawa, Miko Yahiko from Rinkai!) — The dark elf likes convenience store snacks, magic research, and working but hates raw eggs, natto, elves, the undead, and swimming. I notice a common hatred of water sports between the elf species. Kuroeda’s hobbies include collecting materials for making magic potions. Her problem areas are her thicc butt and thighs (I fail to see the problem here), and she can be serious-minded and teasingly mean.
Thicc Monster Girls of Plus-Sized Elf
Elves won’t be the only parallel world visitors to Naoe’s health clinic. Thicc monster girls of every stripe will come looking to shed unwanted weight. I see an ogre, mandrake, mermaid, werewolf, orc, kobold, satyr, skeleton (how does a bag of bones get fat?), dragon, and cyclops. That’s right! It’s the Planet Fitness version of Monster Musume or Monster Girl Doctor! Here are two girls I’m excited about.
Oga, 男鹿, O-Ga (Ayaka Fukuhara, Rin Shibuya from THE IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls) — This ogre MILF is over two meters tall, loves children and saunas, but dislikes sweets and arts and crafts. Oga’s hobbies include drinking (I love her already) and reading parenting magazines. Her problem area is her lower abdomen (takes a closer look), and motherly instincts sometimes run out of control.
Satero, 佐手呂, Sa-Te-Ro (Yuka Iguchi, Cow Girl from Goblin Slayer) — The female satyr likes human desires but hates lust. She sounds like a succubus with a libido issue. Her hobbies include cooking, but her problem area is her legs. Naoe notes she sometimes acts like a spoiled brat.
Plus-Sized Elf Makes Me Go Heh.
Huh. That gate to an alternate dimension looks sketchy. Ooh. A stereotypical elf stepped through those doors. I see a werewolf on a staircase. Ha! All the monster girls are in this introductory montage. Jiggly doctor at the chiropractic relaxation clinic! Aw, join her for drinks, Naoe! I want to see Akiho-sensei get handsy. Uh oh. The last patient of the day is creepy. Naoe, you take her. “Elfuda” calls him a “human.” Odd. Elfuda wants to get rid of her love handles. Dear readers, let me familiarize you with the Japanese word “debu” (デブ, chubby, fat). Because Elfuda is making her chubby “debut.” She never had those rolls of fat when she “ran through the meadows” back home in Kafar. Where’s that? Naoe figured it out. Elfuda is an elf (エルフだ)!
Elfuda wears an “I ♥️ Oil” T-shirt. Miss Plus-Sized Elf, we can tell. Chubby nipples! Squeal! Akiho-sensei has curves in the right places, too. Elfuda hasn’t felt this intense hands-on treatment before. That’ll change quickly! Elfuda needs a few post-orgasmic moments. Elf ears confirmed! Where did she grab that bow from? Oops. That T-shirt was on its last thread. Man! I thought jiggle physics was necessary for breasts, but belly jelly wiggling makes technological strides here. Elfuda’s skin-colored panties aren’t long for this world, either.
Supersized Fries for the Plus-Sized Elf
Elfuda explains how the gate to her parallel world works: her weight must be the same as when she passed into Japan. That’s the most creative thing I’ve ever heard about gates to parallel worlds in anime! But why did Elfuda come to Japan? For french fries! Ah. Elf cuisine is primitive compared to the foodie nation. The “human” food is too tasty, so the “human” doctor needs to take responsibility! That suspiciously sounds like injecting fat seeds to expand an elf’s belly is the same as creaming a raw human pie. Degenerates out there know what I mean!
Elfuda signed up for Naoe’s weight-loss treatment. He’s a personal trainer! Miss Plus-Sized Elf, no french fries on your diet! Increasing metabolism could create a caloric deficit faster, so how about adding sauna and hot tub sessions to Elfuda’s aerobic exercise? Akiho-sensei merely desires a chubby partner to hang out with her in the spa. Elfuda marvels at the convenience of hot baths without the toil of boiling water with loads of firewood. No chocolate milk, either!
French Fries Are Love, French Fries Are Life
Yay! Elfuda is back to her fit, thicc self. She can pass through the portal again. Hey, Naoe can have a bit of junk food to celebrate. Ack! She’s stuffing her face with french fries again! Elfuda’s T-shirt says, “Calorie Love.” She went home and came back to Japan for french fries! Why? Because she knows she can lose weight again! Naoe-san, mada yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
Next time, a dark elf convenience store clerk pays a visit. Plus, debu fans rejoice for the end credits.
Plus-Sized Elf (Elf-san wa Yaserarenai.) streams uncensored on Hidive in Japanese audio and English subtitles.
