Our J-List writers search far and wide for the best anime news and features, so we cornered them and asked them for their top anime-related picks of 2023.
Top Battle Scene: Yor vs The Cruise Ship (Spy x Family)
As I’ve noted in previous articles, I started reading Spy x Family long before they announced the anime, so I knew this scene was coming. In fact, it was one of my most anticipated anime moments of the year. This scene did not disappoint! From the sweeping camera angles to the close-up kill shots, Yor finally got to shine on the screen! After over 30 episodes of Yor playing third fiddle to Loid and Anya, she got to show off those skills that have been hinted at since early in the first season. This was what fans had been waiting for!
Top Waifu: Fuyutsuki (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague)
In my early days of anime fandom, I loved firey tsunderes. The type that would challenge you. The type that would make you earn their love. Now that I’m older, my tastes have changed and I’m looking for someone who will just be chill with me which is why Fuyutsuki fits that bill. She’s the calming presence that so many of us need in this chaotic world. When I feel like I just want to melt, this woman is the one that I want bringing me back to life.
Best Artwork: The Apothecary Diaries
There were so many series that I could’ve put down for this one especially considering The Ancient Magus’ Bride returned this year! In the end, I needed to go with an underdog, The Apothecary Diaries. This gorgeous series is beautiful to behold. In every episode, you see flashes of beauty mixed in with the drab life of the best girl, Maomao. If you’re looking for something that will figuratively set your eyes on fire, this series is where you should be looking.
