Minami takes Tsubasa to a winter festival. Later, she meets Tsubasa’s intimidating grandmother.
Episode 2 — “It’s Super Warm Inside the Snow Fort”
Hmm.
The second episode of Hokkaido Gals captured how people feel growing up and older in their hometowns. Are the attractions and events still exciting and fun in reality without the filter of nostalgia? I’m a native of Pasadena, California, home to the Tournament of Roses and the Rose Bowl every New Year. I remember watching the parade from the sidelines, decorating floats, and driving the route as midnight strikes. Then I grew older and found the street closures, extra cars, and illegal fireworks a nuisance. The best seat in Pasadena to watch the Rose Parade, even a block away from the parade route, is right in front of your TV, tuned to KTLA Channel 5.
But then my college friends wanted to visit the Rose Parade, and I experienced my hometown as a tourist through their eyes. Seeing things through an adult lens instead of a child’s made things fun again. I still wouldn’t go through the Rose Parade hassle unless out-of-towners asked me, but that is what we saw Minami feel in Hokkaido Gals as she took Tsubasa to the Kitami Winter Festival. Now I’m even older and can appreciate playing tourist in my hometown. Minami has a friendly and romantic excuse for touring Kitami and Hokkaido as she takes Tsubasa around his new home.
Hokkaido Gals Have Hearts of Gold
The winter festival date also highlights how Minami adds dimensions to the stereotypical gyaru character. She was self-aware enough to realize her fun memories of the festival as a child might not match a teenager’s expectations. She also worried that a sophisticated city dweller could look down on simple countryside ideas for entertainment. That’s a good character development piece from Hokkaido Gals for Minami’s inferiority complex about rural sentiments. Thankfully, Tsubasa is a simple creature. He enjoys everything novel, especially when a beautiful gyaru hangs on his elbow. Minami’s heart is much warmer than the inside of a snow fort.
Heh.
Minami’s snow child matches her attitude! She’s such a flirt! Whispering in Tsubasa’s ear so early in the morning. That will wake him up! He’s curious about the Kitami Winter Festival. Does Tsubasa like snow statues and ice sculptures? Suddenly, it’s a date with a gyaru in Hokkaido Gals!
Fun! Here’s the Fuyuki girls having dinner. I see MILF Fuyuki as the source of Minami’s ample, er, gifts. Ah. Minami hasn’t been to the winter festival since elementary school. Will a Tokyo high schooler like Tsubasa think it’s lame?
Minami’s selfies almost one-shot Tsubasa’s health meter. Her outdoor fashion will finish him off! Aw. Minami worries Hokkaido culture will underwhelm Tsubasa. Children indeed love the festival! And Tsubasa, too! Minami’s fears were unfounded. Selfies with snow statues are better than Tsubasa’s boring shots. A corn dog with powdered sugar… Okay. Hokkaido Gals lets the gyaru have a bite and an indirect kiss! That Minami. She knew what she was doing! Minami is also having fun because Tsubasa is with her. Look at her blush! Oh, good. She confessed her misgivings about taking Tsubasa to a festival she hadn’t attended for many years. Ack! Minami slipped, but Tsubasa cradled the back of her head. Forced intimacy: gotta love it. Smooth. He asked for another date!
Hokkaido Gals Love Junk Food?
Lunchtime with Minami. Ha! Another Hokkaido commercial. Yakisoba Bento is “only available in Hokkaido.” Aw. Minami is totally Tsubasa’s girlfriend now. She brought Hokkaido cuisine for lunch because he enjoyed the food stalls at the winter festival. Tsubasa stays away from junk food. Is he a sheltered rich kid? Look at his traditional bento. Tsubasa’s grandmother made it for him. Oh ho. Tsubasa did have a sheltered childhood! Minami is his first for everything! Everything, Hokkaido Gals? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Ha! Minami asked him straight out! “Spoiled rich kid!” Now she wants to see his house. She used her unfair advantage: lethal cleavage.
First, a detour into a cozier abode. Snow forts are super warm inside, Minami claims. Anyone can take everything she says here the wrong way! First time. Warm inside. So tight. Hold closer. Pull out! But you just got inside! Moan! Obscene! Ahahaha! Well done, Hokkaido Gals! Grandma caught him! She heard “an inappropriate” conversation! Haha! “Too quick!” Oh, dear. Tsubasa insisted Minami was only his “classmate” instead of his friend. Well. Minami won’t allow that! This Hokkaido gal knows how to deliver older ladies safely home! Aw. Tsubasa quickly made up with his “important friend.” Okay. Perhaps Tsubasa is not a spoiled brat but is still a rich kid. Tokyo yen go a long way in Hokkaido. Grandma likes how she makes Tsubasa smile.
