Gyaru girls are among the most popular archetypes in anime, just behind cat girls. They dress in flashy clothes to stand out from other girls. They can sport finely tanned skin and blonde hair, plus modifying the standard school uniform. Let’s take a look at some top-tier gyaru waifus.
1. Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling / Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo suru)
We can’t start a gyaru anime girl article without Marin Kitagawa in the top spot. She’s been a popular waifu for quite a while. It might have something to do with her famous swimsuit. Marin meets Wakana Gojo by sheer coincidence, and the two strike up a casual acquaintance relationship. Things change when Marin discovers Wakana’s sewing hobby and asks him to help her with cosplays. He agrees as any red-blooded man should. Their bond grows from there.
Shinichi Fukuda began writing and illustrating this series on January 19, 2018. Square Enix has since published twelve volumes in Young Gangan.
If you want to bring Marin in that famous swimsuit home, J-List has you covered. The Marin Kitagawa 1/7 Figure Swimsuit Ver. from the My Dress-Up Darling section is now available for pre-order.
2. Galko (Please Tell Me! Galko-chan / Oshiete! Gyaruko-chan)
Galko-chan, or Gyaruko-chan, is a cute, sweet, and otherwise innocent gyaru girl. It’s even in her name. She is friends with Otako, an otaku, and Ojou, a rich girl. However, her thicc figure, style, and reputation lead many to believe she’s quite the partygoer. In reality, even discussing lewd topics flusters Galko-chan quite easily. She is equally unhappy to learn that her older sister, who has an even more provocative figure than hers, wears Galko-chan’s school uniform during lewd roleplay activities.
Kenya Suzuki began writing and illustrating his thicc gyaru series on June 27, 2014. Kadokawa Shoten has since published five volumes in ComicWalker.
3. Yukana Yame (My First Girlfriend Is a Gal / Hajimete no Gal)
Like Galko-chan, Yukana may look lewd, but she’s relatively innocent. Junichi Hashiba approaches her as a quick way to get laid but soon discovers that she is far more than just some gyaru girl, and they begin dating in earnest. Despite being on guard against lewd stuff, she willingly let Junichi grab her chest. She also becomes weak in the knees whenever her gyaru friend Ranko Honjo grasps her own. Yukana will also team with Rank to hold the oppai-loli Nene Fujinoki.
Meguru Ueno began working on this series on November 26, 2015. Kadokawa Shoten has since released seventeen volumes in Monthly Shonen Ace.
4. Sakura (Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro / Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san)
It was only a matter of time before we got to a gyaru named Sakura. Anime has a lot of Sakuras, and not all of them are made equal. This Sakura is one of Nagatoro’s friends, the gyaru of the group. She’s kind, flashy, and flirtatious. Though she’s friendly with Senpai, she’s seemingly not above stringing along other guys for amusement.
Joe has written in-depth reviews for the anime series for those interested in learning more about the anime.
Nanashi began writing and illustrating the series on November 1, 2017. Kodansha has since released seventeen volumes in Magazine Pocket.
5. Junko Enoshima (Danganronpa)
It’s about time we talked about the psychotic gyaru. Junko is a fashion-minded genius who wishes to bring despair to all. She takes pleasure in that despair, a character trait few people share in her series. Her own twin sister had a differing opinion about misery. Regardless, she single-handled orchestrated “The Tragedy” to bring about global despair. As insane and evil as she is, Junko does have an eye for fashion.
Kazutaka Kodaka first created this despair-ridden series on November 25, 2010, with the release of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
6. Akari Watanabe (More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers / Fufu Ijo, Koibito Miman / Fuukoi)
Akari goes to a school with a unique program: pair students up and grade them on how well they can act as partners. This is to prepare them for when they actually start romantic relationships. As she is a gyaru who demands the best, she would prefer to be paired with a school idol like Minami Tenjin. Instead, she’s paired up with the introvert gamer Jiro Yakuin. Although she’s desperately unhappy with her Marriage Practical partner, a shared sentiment, their fake happiness became real. Turns out a gyaru and a gamer can make fine partners.
Yuki Kanamaru began work on this series on March 2, 2018. Kadokawa Shoten has since released ten volumes in Young Ace.
7. Ran Kotobuki (Gals! / Gyarus!)
Ran is the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest gal,” and calls Shibuya her home. She lives the gyaru life perfectly with her friends Miyu Yamazaki and Aya Hoshino. Ran comes from a long line of police officers, so she can’t permit justice to pass before her. This trait leads her to become the most respected gyaru in Shibuya.
Mihona Fujii wrote and illustrated this series from December 29, 1998, to May 1, 2002. Shueisha published all ten volumes in Ribon.
8. Manatsu Shiraishi (Kandagawa Jet Girls)
Manatsu is half of Team MKHU. She’s partnered with fellow gyaru Yuzu Midorikawa and acts as the team Jetter. Manatsu is a fashionable girl who uses Western slang and enjoys being in the limelight. However, she is still considerate of others and genuinely cares for her friends. She might also have some yuri tendencies.
Kadokawa, Marvelous, and Egg Firm worked together to create this multimedia project. There is an anime and video game that fans of racing girls can enjoy.
9. Nana Sunohara (Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou / Sunohara-so no Kanrinin-san)
Nana is one of the female tenants at the Sunohara Inn. She’s a kind and flirtatious gyaru who becomes fascinated by Aki Shiina. Nana spends a great deal of time hanging out with Aki, and upon discovering that he had never played a video game before, she taught him how. She’s even taken him to meet her friends, which enflamed her jealousy when they began flirting with him. I don’t think she has much to worry about. Her figure, laid bare in revealing clothing, and those tan lines easily make her a candidate for Best Girl.
Nekoume began working on this series in 2014. Ichijinsha has since released seven volumes, first in Manga 4-Koma Palette, then in Monthly Comic Rex.
10. Mika Jougasaki (THE IDOLM@STER)
Mika is a very popular idol affiliated with 346 Production. Rika is her younger sister and is likewise a famous idol and gyaru. Mika desperately loves her little sister and works to be a good role model. Her flashy appearance and bubbly personality perfectly fit a gyaru role. Underneath that, however, she’s shy about expressing herself. Remember to have gold and pink penlights ready for her live shows! Her sole color is gold, but fans shine gold and pink during her concerts.
The Idolmaster is a multimedia franchise that began in 2005, spanning multiple games, anime, and manga that all revolve around a producer raising and training a group of idols to perform to the best of their abilities.
