Announced back in August, Seven Seas Entertainment launched their danmei website to showcase their localization of three iconic novel series Chinese author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu to be translated for English release! As of December 14th, English-speaking fans can finally get their hands on the first volume of The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and Heaven Offical’s Blessing.
What is danmei?
As described by Seven Seas Entertainment, danmei is “a Chinese fiction genre focused on romanticized tales of love and attraction between men, similar to BL (boy’s love) from Japan. The majority of well-known danmei writers are women writing for women, although all genders produce and enjoy the genre.”
Who is MXTX?
Mo Xiang Tao Xiu is an internationally recognized author of danmei novel series. All three of her book series have received manhua and television adaptations as either live-action or animation. Originally starting by self-publishing her work on the website JJWXC, for free, MXTX’s audience grew to an astounding size.
Her most famous work is without question Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which received not only a manhua adaptation but also two TV serialization. In 2018, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation began serialization as an animated adaptation. Its third season began airing in China this August and concluded in October. In 2019, the live-action TV drama aired for 50 episodes, titled The Untamed.
Heaven Offical’s Blessing has also received an anime adaptation and recently became the very first donhua (Chinese anime) to be dubbed in English by Funimation. An upcoming live-action, titled Eternal Faith, is currently in production.
The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Half-demon Luo Binghe rose from humble beginnings and a tortured past to become unrivaled in strength and beauty. With his dominion over both the Human and Demon Realms and his hundreds-strong harem, he is truly the most powerful protagonist… in a trashy web novel series!
At least, that’s what Shen Yuan believes as he finishes reading the final chapter in Proud Immortal Demon Way. But when a bout of rage leads to his sudden death, Shen Yuan is reborn into the world of the novel in the body of Shen Qingqiu — the beautiful but cruel teacher of a young Luo Binghe. While Shen Qingqiu may have the incredible power of a cultivator, he is destined to be horrifically punished for crimes against the protagonist. The new Shen Qingqiu now has only one course of action: get into Luo Binghe’s good graces before the young man’s rise to power or suffer the awful fate of a true scum villain!
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Wei Wuxian was once one of the most outstanding men of his generation, a talented and clever young cultivator who harnessed martial arts, knowledge, and spirituality into powerful abilities. But when the horrors of war led him to seek a new power through demonic cultivation, the world’s respect for his skills turned to fear, and his eventual death was celebrated throughout the land.
Years later, he awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf. Though granted a second life, Wei Wuxian is not free from his first, nor the mysteries that appear before him now. Yet this time, he’ll face it all with the righteous and esteemed Lan Wangji at his side, another powerful cultivator whose unwavering dedication and shared memories of their past will help shine a light on the dark truths that surround them.
Heaven Official’s Blessing
Born the crown prince of a prosperous kingdom, Xie Lian was renowned for his beauty, strength, and purity. His years of dedicated study and noble deeds allowed him to ascend to godhood. But those who rise may also fall, and fall he does — cast from the heavens and banished to the world below.
Eight hundred years after his mortal life, Xie Lian has ascended to godhood for the third time, angering most of the gods in the process. To repay his debts, he is sent to the Mortal Realm to hunt down violent ghosts and troublemaking spirits who prey on the living. Along his travels, he meets the fascinating and brilliant San Lang, a young man with whom he feels an instant connection. Yet San Lang is clearly more than he appears… What mysteries lie behind that carefree smile?
How Accurate are the Translations?
Shockingly, to a T! At the time of writing this, we’re a little more than halfway through the first volume of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and have peeked at the other two series to see a number of surprises that keep the novels so faithful to the original Chinese language. Slang terms and metaphors are often literally translated with footnotes provided to explain the context and intended meaning. Cultural references are explained with a bit of added subtext. Each novel also includes a massive glossary and categorized appendixes. Those new to each series will have plenty of reference sheets including character profiles, translation explanations, pronunciation guides, location guides, and even terminology guides so you don’t get too confused by formal Chinese suffixes or historical culture references.
It can be a bit of a big leap, jumping from Japanese media to Chinese media with some of the biggest franchises rooted in ancient Chinese mythos and spiritual fiction, but Seven Seas Entertainment has, without question, made it easy and accessible for anyone to enjoy Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s novels, whether you’re just curious or a long-time follower.
All three series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu can be purchased at your local bookstore for $20.00 apiece, or digitally via Amazon Kindle for $9.99. Enjoy!
