It’s 2024, and already we’ve got some great entries in the book Crazy Things People Do for Attention. It’s a lot like the Darwin Awards for social media. One Japanese rising star seems hell-bent on getting injured for our viewing pleasure. Chiitan is a cute yuru-chara (Japanese mascot) with a love for danger and huge… um… eyes.
Profile of a Violent Cutie
Chiitan is a fairy baby otter with a turtle for a hat. Do you need anything cuter? How about silly stunts, reckless driving, and no-hold’s-barred wrestling? It’s only adorable when someone else is getting hurt. Jackass got our attention because we knew people were going to get hurt. We couldn’t look away. Chiitan might get the odd “aw, cute” response from fans, but the model is the same: do something dangerous and show the world.
Not Your Usual Yuru-Chara Cutie
A few notable yuru-chara have taken the standard mold of a “cute-character-does-cute-things” and body-slammed it into oblivion. These stars made something too cool to ignore. Like heavy metal drummer Nyango Star and South Korean jump-scare bear BellyGom. Popularity is everything to a mascot. Akiba Maid Wars even taught us that yuru-chara might meet a violent end.
Of course, a few of us in the J-List office reserve a special place in our hearts for Gunma-chan, the orange horse of Gunma prefecture. J-List HQ is in Gunma, so we’re proud of our little pony with his cabbage hat.
You can follow Chiitan’s crazy antics on Twitter, TikTok, or Instagram.

Want your own loveable mascot? One that’s soft in the right places and fills you with good feelings? What if she was also a tanned gyaru? Nitroplus’s mascot, Super Sonico, is ready to encourage you to answer “yes” to all of the above. She’s in a bikini, and I’m about to pass out.
