The Demon Defense Force sends Kyouka, Mira, and Yuuki to investigate a Thunder God abducting women.
Episode 8 — “The Commander of the 2nd Squadron”
Hmm.
The hardened gang leader with a heart has been a staple of anime and manga for decades. Think Kamina from Gurren Lagann as the archetype, only in space with drilling mecha and giga spirals. Chained Soldier builds on that character type by setting the story in a matriarchal society. How does Mira Kamiunten’s banchou embody a soft heart beneath a tough exterior in a fan service show? Read on for the two methods we see in this week’s episode.

Chained Soldier’s Banchou Maiden
We have already seen how Chained Soldier established Mira’s bona fides as a rough gang leader with ethical standards and a sense of fair play in Season 2’s opener. The anime rehashes that here, with a boob smash replay, just in case you forgot. But we also glimpsed Mira’s caring side when she re-tied Yuuki’s boot laces. Episode 8 continues in this vein through small acts of wiping Yuuki’s face and nudging him out of the way of a girl backing up to take a picture. Mira is an observant mother hen, which contrasts with her harsh tone and permanent scowl. So, we saw no surprises there, only confirmation.
However, Chained Soldier did surprise us in a scene blending sexiness, humor, and fan service. And the anime built up to that scene from the start by using other characters.
Let’s look at the progression. Yuuki met the silent, potentially man-hating Warwara Pilipenko, then the horny Yakumo, before taking in the girlfriend experience with Tenka. That’s a broad spectrum of feminine attitudes toward the masculine. So, which attitude would contrast the hardest and the funniest with Mira’s hard-boiled exterior? Yes. The virginal one who expects only engaged couples see each other naked. Mira is a demure shojo around men!
Knowing all that, I’m looking forward to how Yuuki’s Slave form changes for a hoodlum with an innocent heart of gold who can clone herself. Chained Soldier’s artists have had so much fun with the other versions, so I expect another inspired choice.
Chained Soldier Makes Me Say Heh.
Yuuki roams the halls of the Demon Defense Headquarters, but he’s in danger from the other squadron commanders. The Russian beauty, Warwara Pilipenko, hasn’t spoken yet, but she stalked Yuuki suspiciously. Is she a man-hater or “allergic” to boys? Yakumo, on the other hand, loves boys now, or at least she loves one boy in Chained Soldier. How many corners and hallways does the 10th Squadron compound have? Yakumo wants to unleash their whirlwind combo amid a whirlwind romance in Hokkaido! The reward ritual would be her goal, of course. Aw. Tenka puts Yuuki at ease. She must play the future sister-in-law for Aoba, right?
Ren joins the commanders’ conference via a remote feed from America. Chained Soldier’s Superwoman is a hot commodity. The issue at hand — missing women in Yokohama linked to sightings of a Thunder God. Kyouka and Tenka react to reports that Kuusetsu can phase through walls like Naon. Ren chose Mira to rescue the women and defeat the Thunder God, and Mira picked Kyouka as her partner. Yakumo had volunteered, but the 2nd Squadron Commander wisely rejected her because her wind-based ability would wreck the city. We saw earlier in the season how Kyouka and Mira have a rough and friendly rivalry, so watching these two gorilla women team up should be a blast!
Chained Soldier Goes on a Harem Date
The police’s work laptop runs Windows 11 with Chrome, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Oh. They’re the Azuma cops who work for the special police force from Chained Soldier, Episodes 5 and 6. Yuuki recalls the moment when Shikoku captured Naon and Coco after he learned that the Thunder God walked through the walls of the victims. They’re from all over the city, so Kyouka suggested a tour of the place to familiarize them with the layout. It’s a date! Mira and Kyouka recounted how they became rivals after Kyouka became the only one who had ever beaten up Mira with her bare fists. The gang leader from Okinawa was undefeated until then. Mira acts like everyone’s big sister, even wiping Yuuki’s face during dinner and ensuring tourists can take pictures.
Sharing a hotel room in Yokohama? Time for Chained Soldier’s bathroom scenes and accidental fan service! Ah. Mira noticed Kyouka and Tenka exchanging knowing glances during the commanders’ meetings, hinting to Mira that the pair knew more than the official reports contained. Do ya think? Kyouka’s breasts hold secrets, but they’ll share them with Mira’s chest when the time comes. Oh, good! Yuuki revealed how Kyouka infused her sword with Slave power. Hold on. A boy sleeps nearby while women bathe naked in the bathroom. You know what that means. Yuuki’s lucky sukebe power will kick into overdrive!
The Chained Soldier intermission card pits Mira and Kyouka in a fierce boob-squashing contest. No chains necessary to cover those flattened nipples.
Har. Yuuki figured Mira, the gang leader, would dump his body in Yokohama Harbor. But she’s a gyaru with a shojo heart. Look at her innocent blush! No harbor-dumping tonight, Yuuki.
Chained Soldier: Attack of the Clones!
Today’s the day to storm the Shuuki lair and rescue the abducted women. Shuuki grunts usually burst through shimmers between the Mato and Japan and run amok. Unique Shuuki running a covert operation has never happened before. Chained Soldier drags its feet, teasing us about how Mira’s Mato Peach Power works. Odd. Yuuki should express surprise at watching Mira fight, but Kyouka shouldn’t. Oh! Kyouka had responded to another unique Shuuki threatening a hostage. Mira’s ability can handle that because she can create an army of clones. Even better, they’re all the same strength! There’s no dilution like you might have seen in other shonen shows. Kyouka and Yuuki can still contribute, and Chained Soldier wasted time on a needless footnote about Kyouka’s second-in-command.
Kuusetsu’s motive for kidnapping the women remains a mystery. Mira’s clones are everywhere, but Kuusetsu wasn’t. She shifted her concern to Kyouka’s cuts from the Shuuki’s spike shrapnel. Oh, guess what! Kyouka can use the time Yuuki spends checking the rest of her body for wounds to perform his reward ritual. That’s right — check every square inch! Public nudity is the kink Chained Soldier presents today. Hohoho! The innocent Mira caught Kyouka and Yuuki doing “naughty” things. Are they dating? Engaged? Have they climbed up the staircase to adulthood? Mira must know! Yuuki insists he merely admires her. Lies! He could be lying to himself, but most shonen heroes are downright obtuse. Mira has a Number One Fan who powers her up, so she understands the loyalty.
Demonic Sex Ed?
Worrying about a boy and girl hooking up wore Mira out more than defeating unique Shuukis and rescuing naked hostages. Chained Soldier chooses a convenient moment for Kuusetsu to sneak into Yuuki’s room and seduce him! She’s curious about sex because she kidnapped one of the Yokohama women as she boinked a man. Kuusetsu controls Yuuki’s body after stabbing him with one of her feathers. Does he now understand how his Slave partners feel during the reward ritual? Cliffhanger!
Mira introduces herself in the omake. Beneath her tough exterior, she’s a girly girl who shares puppy videos with Ren!
