Episode 10 — “Yokohama Showdown”
Hmm.
Shonen action anime have an easier time staying true to their genre than fan service shows like Chained Soldier. The shonen formula for a climactic chapter in a story arc features a set battle scene, shifting between many characters pitted against each other. But what can an anime whose selling points are bare breasts and sex fetishes do when its plot is temporarily less about PLOT? Read on for thoughts on how Chained Soldier solved this problem during its Yokohama Showdown arc.

Kuusetsu’s Coitus Interruptus and Coitus Resumptus in Chained Soldier
The anime has portrayed enough of Kuusetsu’s charming, spoiled-brat persona that we could easily buy into her actions in resuming boinking Yuuki in his Slave form after a brief skirmish. The youngest Thunder God might have spent so much time in Japan that she developed an NTR fetish! And Chained Soldier, again, cock-blocked her!
Grandma Azuma — Feisty Cougar
Did you know that Chained Soldier had a missing element in its shonen action emulation? Where was the dirty old pervert sexually harassing the young, shapely ladies? Where was Master Roshi (Dragon Ball) or Jiraiya (Naruto)? Good news for us, the anime introduced its version during the Azuma Banquet arc. Grandma Tobera Azuma! We just needed an excuse to show her in action, slapping Maia’s butt cheeks or wiggling fingers creepily. A small pause in fighting Kuusetsu’s clones on Yokohama Bay Bridge was all Tobera needed to fantasize about the Azuma girls “doing this and that” to Yuuki.
Chained Soldier Adheres to Shonen Formula Too Closely
I hated how shonen shows padded the time with minutes-long replays of scenes from their previous episodes. I understand that this is an adaptation issue from fitting manga chapters into a weekly 24-minute frame that neatly completes in twelve or thirteen installments. But I still don’t enjoy reliving the past trauma of watching Bleach or Naruto wasting five or more minutes of my time. I hope Chained Soldier can finish up the Yokohama Showdown with plenty of time left to cover Yuuki’s expensive reward ritual. Let it be so!
Chained Soldier Makes Me Say Heh.
The next phase of the Yokohama arc begins with Yuuki and Kyouka attacking Kuusetsu after she had devoured Mira. But Kuusetsu can instantly use Mira’s powers. Can Kyouka’s blade swings match the speed of Kuusetsu’s feather daggers? The Thunder God can already access Mira’s increased power levels. Things don’t look good for Yuuki, either.
Kuusetsu hopes to continue bedroom activities in public! Not if Aoba has a say in it! Yuuki’s big sister has joined the fray! No sexy time for her little brother! How did she get there? Did Tenka help her? Confirmation from Chained Soldier — Aoba can feel Coco and Naon’s energy inside Kuusetsu. They’re alive! But how would they force the Thunder God to spit them back out?
Not good. Kuusetsu can already use Mira’s cloning ability! Even worse — Kuusetsu brought out her fourth Shuuki trading card. It’s a demon even larger than Yokohama! Funny. The Kuusetsu clones joke among themselves. But Kyouka isn’t in the mood because she knows reinforcements are coming.
Tenka arrives, then Tobera and Maia. Oh no. Tobera provoked most of the Kuusetsu clones by calling herself the Supreme Commander. She’s the former Supreme Commander, but let’s not argue about the minutiae. This scene is Chained Soldier’s chance to show how Tobera and Maia use their powers offensively. Maia can keep summoning giant hand shields while Tobera prepares her life-sucking skill for multiple targets. Grandma Tobera spanks a precocious brat. And Maia, too!

Space Lasers in Chained Soldier? Why Not?
Here comes Ren one-shotting the colossal Shuuki from the White House. Long range field goal! That surprised Kuusetsu, Aoba, and Yuuki, but not Kyouka or Tenka. The other Demon Defense Force commanders have seen it all from Ren before.
Did the battle shift to cleanup mode? Tenka needs her hero moments before the Chained Soldier episode ends. Kuusetsu noticed that she couldn’t control her clones as well as she’d hoped. But her real body is more than enough to defeat Aoba and Kyouka’s reinforcements. At least, she’s confident about that! Can Kuusetsu’s clones use her other absorbed powers?
Aoba needs a hero moment, too. But Aoba’s roaring energy isn’t enough to hurt Kuusetsu that much. Plus, the Thunder God had healing abilities. What can Tenka do against Kuusetsu’s phasing skills? Uh oh. Kuusetsu’s clones can draw on her other powers. She’s turning them into stabbing landmines.

Nice. Tobera’s fantasy in the epilogue supplies us with welcome fan service. The Azuma household can be Yuuki’s harem! Tobera would enjoy showing the young’uns how to satisfy a man. Maia reminds her grandmother that they still have more clones to eliminate.
