Isekai series are becoming a dime a dozen. Still, gems can be found even in a crowded other world. We’ve discussed Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! (Mezametara Saikyo Sobi to Uchusenmochi Datta node, Ikkodate Mezashite Yohei toshite Jiyuu ni Ikitai) a couple of times now, right? It’s an isekai that traded magic and dragon mounts for undefined mental abilities and spaceships. It premiered recently, and as of this writing, two episodes are out. Are you watching? If yes, carry on. If not, let’s see if we can change that.

Goodbye, Soul-Draining Office IT Job! I’ve Been Reborn as a Space Mercenary!
Ryuto’s space-faring isekai series first boarded the internet and our hearts on February 4th, 2019. In short, Takahiro “Hiro” Sato awakens aboard his high-powered Stella Online spaceship, the Krishna. Is he in the world of his favorite MMORPG? That question has no answer yet. He meets up with a cute elf girl, gets his bearings, and sets out on his adventure to save enough for that dream planet-side house. He’ll need a big place for that isekai harem life.
Also, he wants some soda. What sort of idyllic isekai adventure doesn’t have any carbonated drinks? It’s a nightmare, worse than any living crystal entity.
Spaceships? In My Isekai Adventure?
I think most people imagine great castles or raging monsters when they hear “isekai.” Most isekai series send protagonists from modern-day Japan to some magical world that looks like medieval Europe. We get comparatively few sci-fi isekai series, like Yomu Mishima’s I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! and The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs. No, I’m not counting Magic Knight Rayearth or The Vision of Escaflowne. Giant robots in a medieval setting do not make for a sci-fi isekai anime.
I can’t say this is one of those “reborn into the world of a fictional media” series, either. Hiro may have inherited his ship from Stella Online, and the enemies and tactics remain the same. But he doesn’t recognize the local rulers and has never heard of their ongoing conflicts. It could be that he’s in another part of the in-game universe, but after 3,000 hours of play, he should be able to recognize some high-ranking nobleman. He also lost all his money, but his cargo was full of rare metals he never collected, which raises even further questions. What do you guys think: is it Stella Online, or another universe that closely resembles Stella Online? Watch the series and let us know what you think below.
What Do Space Mercenaries Do, Exactly?
It’s tough, honest work, and he gets the job done. Hiro is one of the standout isekai protagonists with a backbone. He’s quick to pull the trigger when someone guns for him, and he doesn’t hesitate to step in to save someone from an unfortunate situation. In essence, he can take a life without worrying about the morality of the situation, especially if they’re trying to kill him. Hiro is also quick to put a line between him and the military. He doesn’t want to sign up for anything, nor does he seek glory after winning large-scale battles in space. This mercenary only wants his check for a job well done.
Reborn as a Space Mercenary Flying the Harem Route
Okay, we covered the space battles, and how cool Hiro looks when he goes all Han Solo on some fools. With great isekai come great harems, and we need to discuss that. Yes, Hiro takes some girls to bed. However, the series doesn’t linger on that as much as we might like. There’s some fanservice, but there’s not much romance. At least, not right now. Who can tell about the future? I’m not saying I want to see date nights, but I assumed Hiro and the elf girl Elma just had a one-time thing until they said otherwise.
Where to Watch Reborn as a Space Mercenary
Fellow weebs can legally stream Reborn as a Space Mercenary on Crunchyroll’s streaming platform. It’s currently airing, so get in while the getting’s good. You’re looking at under an hour of space battles to watch, just shy of Hiro’s 3,000 gaming hours.
Should you watch this? Yes, if you like sci-fi, isekai series, harem series, or you’re just in the mood to watch a guy blow stuff up. Also: cute girls, including elves and robot girls.
