How would you feel if your long-term goal, that you’ve been grinding away at for months, crossed the finish line because of someone else’s push? That’s the tangle of feelings Akihito faces after successfully convincing people outside the Hiwamura-sensei Reputation Rehabilitation Committee that she’s not spooky and scary in Yowayowa Sensei. Let’s talk about the human condition of this particular ambivalence: simultaneous satisfaction and envy.

The Yowayowa Sensei Must-Protecc Participation Trophy
Can you believe the first nine episodes of Yowayowa Sensei have only covered five months? It must feel longer for Akihito because he ditched his plan of a simple anonymous high school existence to preach the preciousness of the weak and wimpy teacher he fell in love with. He became class president, but others thought the spooky and scary sensei blackmailed him into the position. Events, like the rerouted Test of Courage, started shifting perceptions. But the stickiness of black magic and the occult had yet to rinse away. A summer pool outing seemed to be the perfect venue to wash away the spooky residue.
And it worked! Mizuki’s friends Maimai and Momopi saw firsthand how caring and devoted Hiyori-sensei was to her students during Yowayowa Sensei’s pool episode. However, in a blow to Akihito’s ego, he had nothing to do with the events that convinced his schoolmates. A combination of Mizuki’s outgoing attitude and Hiyori-sensei managing not to mumble words that sounded like an incantation nudged Maimai and Momopi’s opinion of the spooky and scary sensei into the mere spooky column. That was a win for the reputation-rehab project but a loss for Akihito receiving individual credit.
Was it wrong for Akihito to feel low that he wasn’t responsible for Maimai and Momopi’s change of heart? I say no. Emotions aren’t conscious choices, so he couldn’t help feeling them. Akihito started the project to improve Hiyori-sensei’s image, and it was a letdown not to own its first major milestone. But Yowayowa Sensei provides a universal moral about altruism: When you start caring about others, others start caring about you!
Yuuki Knows the Assignment! Underboobs, Right? Right?!
Let’s face it, Yuuki Yukishita has been an emotional drag and annoyance for all of the characters. She selfishly cares only about boobs. She’s cold and flat tonally. She forces the girls to wear outfits they don’t want to! But. But! That’s how she expresses friendship. The key moment for her character came in Yowayowa Sensei, Episode 3. She hugged Akihito for convincing her to come back to high school. He became another fixture in her life besides fondling Hiyori-sensei’s boobs. And Yuuki paid attention to her friend’s feelings.
Okay, so Akihito received no recognition for swaying the minds of relative strangers about Hiyori-sensei. But while recruiting others to spread the Good News about the weak and wimpy teacher during the Yowayowa Sensei anime season, he patched things up with his childhood friend. Akihito also found a little sister less overbearing than his big sister, Akemi. When he started caring about Hiyori-sensei, who cared about others, those others started caring about him. That’s the power of love. It doesn’t divide. It multiplies.
So, Akihito didn’t change Maimai and Momopi’s minds, and he couldn’t claim credit for it. Hiyori-sensei and Mizuki did that in the moment at the indoor pool. However, because he cared about Yuuki, he earned the reward of a catgirl bikini maid harem! Akihito received recognition in a roundabout fashion.
Yowayowa Sensei’s Wobbly Race to a Season Finale
You can tell Yowayowa Sensei is near the end of its season. The beginning of the school term felt like clearing the decks before an emotionally dramatic conclusion arc for the season finale. That’s predictable, but its transitions felt like speedrunning the manga’s fanservice scenes before it tugs on our heartstrings to reward us with a final dose of dojikko–moe-lucky-sukebe.
Yowayowa Sensei Makes Me Say Heh.
Death by oppai? Momopi wonders about Hiyori-sensei’s airbag deployment. I thought her lucky-sukebe skill only affected herself, but it has an area-of-effect radius! Maimai and Momopi believe Hiyori-sensei’s dojikko-moe attribute is a curse! It’s like a disease outbreak. Mizuki’s habit of breaking and tearing things caught Momopi’s top. But Hiyori-sensei was there to bail her out with her oversized bikini top. Leave it to Yowayowa Sensei to turn a topless scene into a watershed moment for the Hiwamura-sensei Helpers’ Huddle.
Was Hiyori-sensei “super-cool” this whole time? She’s scary and spooky but cares about her students! Did she protect the school with curses and black magic? Close enough to flip Maimai and Momopi’s opinion about Hiyori-sensei. Big success! Akihito kicks himself for not doing anything at the pool to contribute. Did he want some credit so Hiyori-sensei would thank him? Yuuki noticed his gloominess.
Dojikko-Moe, Maximum Moe Kyuun~!
What? The pool episode is now a bikini catgirl maid episode! Let’s dub this Yowayowa Sensei installment the “bikini episode.” Yuuki thought that bikinis would lift Akihito’s spirits. Akihito is also late, so he and his club adviser can do “homework” together. Har. All of Hiyori-sensei’s photos are blurry. So weak and wimpy that image stabilization fails. Ah. She took better ones after Kaya-senpai taught her how. Hiyori-sensei also acknowledged Akihito’s efforts at the fireworks show, which made him so happy that she noticed. Whoops! She hadn’t yet put on one of her “day-off” bras! Akihito chose a group photo because he knew it would make Hiyori-sensei happy to own it. Do your best, shonen! Hopefully that “spoiled-by-mommy” confusion clears up soon.
