When was the last time a show really messed with you? Recently, Peter-senpai published a no-frills romance article and mentioned Plastic Memories. That name alone is enough to give me Vietnam flashbacks. Because of his reason, I considered how certain lists exclude other shows based on a specific trope or topic. As a lover of ecchi anime, I can think of plenty of ecchi shows aimed at people who enjoy mysteries. But due to their lewdness, they’re avoided. Loads of ecchi shows can be suspenseful. So, if you’re a fan of plot twists and tension, check out these three mystery ecchi anime with some serious plot twists.
Feel free to read these at ease. I’ll keep it relatively spoiler-free while inferring and mentioning the stuff that happens. If there’s one thing that Peter and I disagree on, it’s tsunderes. I love them. Tsunderes are what beer and sausages are to Germany. We can’t exist without them. So, every show I’m recommending has a tsundere or tsundere-like behavior.
Mystery Ecchi Anime — Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister
You can initially dismiss Amagami-san Chi no Enmusubi as a traditional harem anime. However, if you stick with the show, you quickly realize that irregularities often crop up. In the beginning, those oddities stay at the periphery of the show. But when it kicks in, not only does it bring down the door, but it crumbles the whole house. A show deserves praise for hinting at something and still surprising when it unfolds. And that’s what this supernatural mystery ecchi anime does. It’s like getting hit by truck-kun. You know it’s coming, but you can’t do anything about it. Though it’s not a nerve-killing show, there are plenty of comedic and slow moments.
Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister follows Uryuu “UwU-kun” Kamihate. Orphaned at a young age, UwU-kun developed a deep loathing of the gods after his prayers for his mother’s health went unanswered. Realizing that only science cures, UwU-kun dedicated his life to becoming a doctor and saving people. But when the ruckus of his orphanage causes too many distractions, the young UwU-kun heads to live at the Amagami Shrine. However, there’s a catch, he gains three top-tier beauties as roommates, and he has to marry one of them to inherit and save the shrine. But his disbelief in the gods and disinterest in romance proves problematic. Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister simulcasts every Tuesday on Crunchyroll.
Mystery Ecchi Anime — Brynhildr in the Darkness
An undeniable truth of the world is that there are a lot of weird things that we’re not privy to. Deciding to go look for that high strangeness doesn’t mean you’ll find it. Most times, it finds its way to you. So, what would you do after something otherworldly comes to you? That’s the question that Gokukoku no Brynhildr asks. And while you get to see a lot of pervy shots, boobs, and large doses of ass, you’re never quite at ease. Unlike Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister, Brynhildr in the Darkness instantly lets you know something is off and only deepens from there. With government conspiracies, some truthfully gruesome deaths, and compounding mysteries, this is a show you should watch if you’re into mystery ecchi anime.
Gokukoku no Brynhildr centers around Ryouta Murakami and how divergent life can be. As a kid, Ryouta feverishly looked toward the skies with his friend Kuroneko. Adamant about the existence of aliens and hoping they’d be the ones to find them, they frequently explored the woods surrounding their town. But their adventures come to an end when an accident costs Kuroneko her life and seriously injures Ryouta. Forced to move on, Ryouta finds Kuroneko a painful memory. But Ryouta’s reality wavers after a new student, Neko Kuroha, waltzes into his classroom. Not only is this new girl named like his old friend, but she’s a carbon copy of her. As Ryouta tries to befriend Neko, he unwittingly steps into a world of magic, government cover-ups, and sheer violence. Brynhildr in the Darkness is available on Crunchyroll.
Love Flops — It’s Like Getting Kicked In The Balls, But The Balls Are Your Heart
As mystery ecchi anime goes, this one is by far my favorite. Unlike the other two, science can explain most of the happenings in this show, but it fails to explain everything. You often see esoteric aspects bleed into the story. I have to admit my biases here. Personally, nothing is scarier than losing touch with reality. I’ve made peace with the possibility of meeting my end in some isolated backwater. But getting to a point where I can’t figure out what reality is, that’s night terror territory. Unfortunately for me, and anyone like me, that’s what Renai Flops brings to the table.
Love Flops follows Asahi Kashiwagi, a guy in an unusual situation. Over a day, Asahi meets several bishoujo and gains their love and admiration. When he learns all those girls are his bridal candidates, his confusion at the oddity grows as they’ll be moving in with him. Accepting it as his new life, Asahi soon builds meaningful connections with all the girls. While some relationships had a bumpy start, Asahi can’t believe how undemanding it was to connect with all the girls. It’s almost as if there was a preexisting connection between them. And as their love grows, Asahi realizes that what he’s experiencing may not be quite what’s there. HIDIVE streams Love Flops.
Mystery Ecchi Anime — When Shows Bring Two Types of Plots
Whether you’re looking for a sci-fi mystery or something more paranormal, I hope these recommendations are enjoyable to watch. I’m aware that some may think combining perviness and mysteries (sci-fi and paranormal) doesn’t work. But I’d argue they work very well. After all, there’s a reason why, despite their production quality, B-grade suspense and horror movies have such a cult following. Cannibal Holocaust can’t compare to the highly refined shows of today. But its legendary status far outclasses even the best modern movies in that genre. Having a bit of sexiness in things is always a buff. So, watch these shows and tell us what you think about them!
