Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Danmachi) creator Fujino Omori has released another epic series for millions to enjoy. Wistoria Wand and Sword (Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria) tells the story of a kind-hearted swordsman who tries to make his way in a world that underestimates his abilities. Did I mention the goddess-like beauty who believes in him? We’ll see how well he does when the series premieres sometime in July 2024. Let’s enjoy the new trailer until then.
Fujino Omori and Toshi Aoi released the original Wistoria Wand and Sword manga on December 9th, 2020. Kodansha has since published nine volumes in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine.
Our new superpowered swordsman and his goddess-like friend are as follows:
- Will Serfort — Kohei Amasaki (Fohl from The Rising of the Shield Hero). A boy born without magic. This hasn’t stopped him from using his superhuman sword skills while trying to join the highest tier of magicians.
- Elfaria Alvis Serfort — Akira Sekine (Maryu Reage from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?). A powerful Magia Vende and Will Serholt’s childhood friend. While others look down on Will, she believes in his skills and waits for him to join her as a Magia Vende.
Atelier Pontdarc has maintained a home page and a Twitter (X) page to promote Wistoria Wand and Sword. You can find additional series information and Key Visuals there.
Wistoria Wand and Sword Defies Expectations
Wistoria Wand and Sword is set in a world that prizes magic. It’s a difficult place for someone like Will, who can’t use magic. However, he aims to join the Magia Vende, the top magic-user rank. He promised his childhood friend Elfaria that he would join her in that rank. Elfaria thoroughly believes in him and waits for the day when he takes his place beside her. Though he lacks magic, he possesses superhuman strength and skills with the blade. Will’s real power is undeniable.
There are similar tropes between Wistoria Wand and Sword and Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, the previous work by Fujino Omori. There’s the pure-hearted and idealistic boy who swings a mighty sword in a vast and dangerous dungeon. He lives in a world of magic and monsters that look down upon him. Cute and powerful girls are inexplicably drawn to him, but he does nothing to romance any of them. So, the harem flag is completely ignored. We can only hope that Will pursues the goddess-like childhood friend Elfaria because Bel is completely fumbling the actual goddess Hestia.
