2023 was quite a year for anime fans. We were inundated with new series, with the average season giving us 50+ new offerings to watch. But while quantity was high, anime fans also got quality, with some real standouts to enjoy each season. We also got many amazing anime waifus, who drove fans wild all year long. In this post, let’s try to pick the best waifus of 2023!
Who Were the Best Anime Waifus of 2023? Read Our Ranking!
For this list of the best anime waifus of the year, here are my criteria:
- I’m choosing female characters we met in 2023. So I won’t include girls from new seasons of Nagatoro-san or Rent a Girlfriend or other continuing series.
- The anime waifu had to have received special attention and/or “Rule 34” art from fans.
- The anime waifu had to have a strong emotional connection with fans, so we could cheer for her when things went well or cry with her when they didn’t.
Hakari and Karane from 100 Girlfriends. In a harem anime that plans to present us with 100 different girlfriends if it runs long enough, how can I pick one girl? It’s hard, so I’ll go combine the first two girls into one since they both have the most screen time.
Frieren from Sousou no Frieren. Sometimes fans show their devotion to a popular anime waifu by drawing her in the most depraved sexual situations they can imagine. Other times, they might express their love of the character through memes. This is what happened to Frieren: After Journey’s End, and I’ll bet a lot of fans tuned in to the anime to see what all the fuss was about. (Browse Sousou no Frieren products on J-List!)
Miyo Saimori from My Happy Marriage. An anime about an unlucky woman who wants nothing more than to marry her fiancee and find a little happiness in the world. It made fans melt from the inside with the love they felt for Miyo.
Ryza from Ryza no Atelier. The popular RPG was a hit in anime form. The show focusing on what fans wanted; lots of fun camera angles of Ryza’s ample thighs, helped a lot!

Shiori Katase from My Tiny Senpai. Anime is all about telling fans stories they wish they could experience themselves, and what could be better than an age-gap office romance involving a short-stack senpai with a D-cup chest? It was tons of fun. (We have her Nendoroid on the site!)
Shizuka Mikazuki from Zom 100. A zombie anime that makes us reflect on the importance of work-life balance? What an amazing concept! And Shizuka was a great character, always calculating the most efficient way to survive the zombie apocalypse instead of enjoying her life.
Anna Yamada from The Dangers In My Heart. Romance stories are taking over anime, and this is a very good thing. One highly enjoyable show was The Dangers In My Heart, about a tall, beautiful girl named Yamada. She falls in love with a short boy named Ichikawa. He starts the series as quite an edgelord, but through their relationship becomes one of the most enjoyable characters of the year.
Kubo-san from Kubo-san Won’t Let Me Be Invisible. Another “beautiful girl loves a dumpy guy for some reason” escapist romance anime. It featured Kana Hanazawa doing some of her best voice work. It’s impossible not to fall in love with any anime waifu she voices!
Fitz from Mushoku Tensei Season 2. The long-awaited first half of Mushoku Tensei took the story in bold new directions, with Rudy going on many adventures, then enrolling at a magical university and dealing with a specific health issue. We also got to see the return of an old friend.
Ai Hoshino from Oshi no Ko. Fans went wild over Oshi no Ko, an idol anime/murder mystery with reincarnation themes. While the show had several popular anime waifus fans loved, we have to include the main girl, Ai Hoshino, on this list.
Tomo Aizawa from Tomo-chan Is a Girl! Another popular character was Tomo-chan, the cutest tomboy anime has brought us in years. She’s in love with her best bro Jun, but since he grew up with her, he has trouble seeing her as a girl.
2B from Nier:Automata Ver1.1a. The anime for Nier:Automata dropped in 2023, allowing fans to see 2B in proper animated form for the first time. Aniplex knew fans wanted to see the character from certain angles, and they didn’t disappoint us.
Mahiru Shiina from The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. Finally, a show with a setup so ridiculous it should have been insulting to fans…but it was one of my favorite shows of the year. Fujimiya lives next door to Shiina, the “angel” of the school. When she sees what a sloppy mess his apartment is, she decides to clean his house, cook healthy meals for him, and basically become his live-in girlfriend. I’m sure that happens in real life all the time!
