Japan’s Alcohol Culture as Expressed through Anime
Each country has a different relationship with alcohol, which is part of its national character. Some countries like England and Ireland have a reputation for heavy drinking. Other countries ban or limit alcohol in various ways. Japan has always had a relaxed attitude about drinking — I have fond memories of sitting around a beer vending machine near the train station with friends and inviting random people who passed by to drink with us. The legal drinking age here is 20, but parents often let their kids drink before that age as long as they’re doing it at home, in a safe way.
I first encountered alcohol in anime in Uchuu Senkan Yamato, shown internationally as Star Blazers. In the series, Dr. Sane would pull out a bottle of his famous “spring water” and start drinking. When I started watching proper anime with subtitles, I saw that alcohol was a part of many anime series and usually played for comic elements but also to make characters more endearing to fans. Because who among us hasn’t experienced a break-up and drowned our sorrows in wine and foreign dramas?
Who Are the Best Drunk Anime Girls?
Aqua, the goddess of water from KonoSuba who gets dragged into an RPG world by Kazuma. She loves liquor more than a little. But won’t it turn into water through her powers?
Another legendary anime drunk is Misato from Evangelion. With a refrigerator full of Ebichu Yebisu beer, she’s always making life hard for straight man Shinji with her drunken personality.
You can’t think about drunk anime girls without including Nonko from Yuuna’s Haunted Hot Spring, a fun ecchi show that has something for everyone.
Haruka Ouma from Guilty Crown is a perfect anime mom: sexy as hell, always wearing skimpy underwear, and not related to her son by blood.

Having a character drink alcohol can add ironic comedy to a scene, like when Komoe-sensei, the teacher from A Certain Magical Index. She’s one of the oldest characters in the show despite her Loli appearance, and it’s funny watching her throw back a beer like a pro.
Another fun character who likes her alcohol is Rory Mercury. She’s a demigoddess who’s lived for thousands of years, yet supposedly has the body of a 13-year-old. It’s fun to see Itami squirm when she comes on to him sexually.
Another popular anime drunk is everyone’s favorite wolf girl, Holo from Spice and Wolf. She loves alcohol almost as much as she loves Apples. (We have Holo figures and plush toys in stock!)
Yor Forger is another awesome drunk anime girl. She’s a terrible assassin, yet needs to get drunk in order to kiss her husband. (We have SPY x FAMILY 2024 calendars, sexy doujinshi and figures in stock. Browse here!)
What’s the definition of happiness for a woman, according to anime? It’s having a professional career where you’re respected for your skills, then going home to your young bartender husband who cooks for you and then whips up exotic cocktails. Anime is Love is Like a Cocktail.
Toba-sensei from Yuru Camp is another “comic relief” drunk anime girl. She even thinks dubs are better than subs!
After a bath there’s nothing like a cold beer, right? Anime is Blood Lad.
A zombie apocalypse is a natural time for people to get drunk together, right? If it’s the HOTD universe, the answer is yes.

It’s great when anime gives us ideas on how to enjoy alcohol with that special person. Try it next time you’re drinking together!
Finally, remember when Uzaki-chan got drunk on her 20th birthday and messed up Senpai’s futons? It was hilarious.
