Endangered Animal Girls Fight off an Alien Invasion
For those new to the series, Tokyo Mew Mew New’s plot has more than animal-themed girls; it has aliens. Those aliens began invading the world some years ago to “reclaim” it from humans. Apparently, they were the first inhabitants of the planet but left millions of years ago due to unnamed disasters and took up residence on an uninhabitable planet. They seek to remove humans via Chimera Animas, monster animals that can cause untold destruction, as Ryou Shirogane, an overseer for the Tokyo Mew Mew team, saw firsthand as a child when one murdered his parents.
On the human side, the μ (Mew) Project seeks to combine the DNA of endangered animals with that of humans to create superhuman beings. The project obviously succeeded, and the Tokyo Mew Mew team was formed.
The Tokyo Mew Mew team consists of the following members:
- Ichigo Momomiya, whose DNA is merged with an Iriomote cat.
- Minto Aizawa, whose DNA is combined with a blue lorikeet.
- Retasu Midorikawa, whose DNA is combined with a finless porpoise.
- Bu-Ling (pronounced as Purin in Japanese) Huang, whose DNA is merged with a golden lion tamarin.
- Zakuro Fujiwara, whose DNA is combined with a gray wolf.
The Tokyo Mew Mew team works at the Café Mew Mew. The café acts as their secret headquarters, complete with an underground lab. The members can keep their activities private while acting as regular waitresses, so they can overhear rumors of possible Anima attacks that may require a full investigation.
Tokyo Mew Mew New Origins
Tokyo Mew Mew New is the most recent anime adaptation of Tokyo Mew Mew, a manga series created and written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi. The original manga series ran from September 2000 to February 2003 for seven volumes in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine.
A sequel manga series titled Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode followed, running from April 2003 to February 2004 for two volumes. Tokyo Mew Mew Olé!, a third manga series, ran from December 2019 to August 2022 for seven collected works.
Besides a couple of video games that never saw the West (to our loss), Studio Pierrot adapted the original anime series from April 6th, 2002, to March 29th, 2003. The series ran for 52 episodes, of which only 26 aired outside Japan. This was 4kids, and they both helped and harmed anime in general, as YouTube user Saberspark explained in his video.
