For boy’s love fans, 2021 has been a pretty dry year minus a few mediocre OVAs and animation shorts. While a few announcements were made in the spring, almost nothing has been released. The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window was one such TV anime announcement made all the way back in January 2021. Now, we’re finally seeing our first glimpse, with a premiere date much closer than we could have imagined.
The boy’s love horror anime will be arriving just in time for Halloween, airing in Japan this October!
Premise
So what exactly is this boy’s love horror anime doing? Well, on the surface The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window seems like a simple run-of-the-mill paranormal investigation duo! Kosuke Mikado is trying to maintain a normal life as a bookstore clerk and get through each day while ignoring the haunting visions of ghosts and spirits in his surroundings. Sadly, not even taking off his glasses can help him avoid spotting them, as for unexplained reasons, despite having bad eyesight, paranormal life always stays in crystal-clear focus. While Mikado finds this to be a curse, the self-proclaimed internet-educated paranormal “expert”, Hirito Hiyakawa immediately labels Mikado a valuable asset to his business and forces him to be his new business partner.
Their investigations lead them to Erika Hiura, a high school student serving as a necromancer, who seems to be linked to all activities they’ve been investigating.
The plot carries some similarities to xxxHolic sending the main duo out into the world to investigate various paranormal activities and learning a bit more about each other.
Is this Really a BL Anime?
Truth be told…we’re not sure? Although The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window is categorized as such, and the manga was been published under BL labels both in Japan and in the west, from the first two volumes we’ve read (review coming soon), all romantic and sexual content is, for the most part, very tongue in cheek. Sexual innuendoes are thrown around easily, and Hirito loves putting Mikado in suggestive positions, but if this is a boy’s love anime then it is one that is really focusing on the occult and horror aspect story more than anything else. Doing so can be a bit misleading, but at the same time, make the series more approachable for a wider audience who might be looking for a new horror series to watch this year.
How Popular is This Series?
Shockingly, The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window is an absolute phenomenon, having sold over a million copies of the manga worldwide (nine volumes, complete), and it received a live-action film adaptation in January 2021.
The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window will begin broadcasting across Japan on October 3rd. Those outside Japan can catch the simulcast on Crunchyroll!
