While I don’t always have kind things to say about how Netflix distributes their anime titles, it’s hard to stay mad at them when they announce new stuff like this.
Over the period of an hour on the morning of Thursday, June 10th, Netflix not only announced that several spring series had made bail and are going to be leaving Netflix Jail this summer, they also announced some brand new titles, just for the giggles.
Kicking things off, Netflix revealed that they have acquired the license to the first movie in the Mobile Gundam Suit Hathaway trilogy.
The next entry in the Gundam series is coming.

The worldwide pandemic has played havoc with this movie’s release date. Originally set to be released in theaters in Japan back in July 2020, the movie has been delayed three times. The latest announced release date has it hitting theaters on June 11th, 2021, and premiering on Netflix on July 1st. As with all dates, things are subject to change. Shuko Murase will direct the trilogy, working off scripts written by Yasuyuki Mutou.

Shaman King (2021) is leaving Netflix Jail! Set to premiere globally on August 9th, this series has been airing since early April 2021 in Japan. Set to run for 52 episodes and tell the entire manga story, Shaman King (2021) is produced by studio Bridge with Joji Furuta serving as the director, working with most of the original voice cast.

The second series to be released from jail is Edens Zero from Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima. J.C. Staff animates this series with Yushi Suzuki credited as the director (Shinji Ishihara is credited as chief director). The series will see its global release outside of Japan on August 26th, 2021.

This next announcement is interesting because of the early names that are involved. Titled Exception, this key visual is our first look at the title that Netflix describes as a “new space horror anime series”. The series will feature a story from Hirotaka Adachi (better known under his pen name Otsuichi) and character designs from Yoshitaka Amano whom you might recognize from some silly game series called Final Fantasy that I’m sure no one has ever heard of.

From the creator of Moonlight Mile, Yasuo Ohtagaki, comes this new original film titled Make My Day. Directed by Makoto Honda and animated by 5 Inc., the movie sounds like another suspense/horror release that features monsters emerging from the darkness on a planet covered with snow and ice.

Getting away from horror, the final title revealed by Netflix is a fantasy anime movie that is based on a live-action Netflix movie. Titled Bright: Samurai Soul, Kyohei Ishiguro (Children of the Whales, Your Lie in April) will direct this story about a ronin and an orc attempting to protect a young elf girl and her wand as she attempts to make it back to the land of the elves in the north.
