Good news! Godzilla has made bail and will get out of Netflix Jail very soon!
In a tweet posted to the Netflix Geeked account, the company revealed that the series Godzilla Singular Point will premiere on the streaming service outside Japan on June 24th. The thirteen-episode kaiju series has been running on Netflix in Japan since March 25th and has been airing on Japanese broadcast stations since April 1st.
A joint production between studios Bones and Orange, Godzilla SP was first announced by Toho Animation and Netflix in October 2020. The series blends different animation styles, with Bones handling the hand-drawn animation and Orange taking care of the computer animation. Atsushi Takahashi is serving as the director, working off scripts written by Toh EnJoe and character designs provided by Kazue Kato (whom you might remember as the creator of the hit shonen series Blue Exorcist).
Unfortunately, much like other series got stuck in Netflix Jail (like Violet Evergarden was or Shaman King and Edens Zero currently are) I fear that fans outside of Japan are going to largely forget about this series by the time it premieres on Netflix. Anyone who really wanted to watch this series already has, and those who waited until it premiered might not even remember that it exists by the time July comes along since that’s around the time that most anime fans are gearing up for the usually massive summer anime season.
Hopefully, though, enough people binge through Godzilla Singular Point once it premieres so that the venture is seen as worthwhile and we get more animated kaiju action in the near future! The fact that this series blends different styles of animation between two different but equally capable studios makes me curious to know if it’ll live up to the hype or if it’s better forgotten.
