While one particular Shonen Jump manga is just beginning, fans had to say goodbye to another series, which is sad. The good news is that fans will get to experience it in a whole new way later down the line.

In an announcement released on Sunday, January 24th, Weekly Shonen Jump revealed that the period action series Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku will get a TV anime adaptation. Unfortunately, no further details were released at the time of the announcement, but stay tuned to the J-List blog for more information as it is revealed.

Originally a manga series written and illustrated by Yuji Kaku, the series launched in January 2018. As mentioned, they announced the anime adaptation on the same day as the final chapter. As of December 2020, there have been twelve volumes released in Japan with the final one set to be released in May 2021. The series is being released in English by Viz Media as part of their Viz Signature imprint and will be releasing volume seven in March 2021.

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a period action series set in the Edo era of Japan. The main character is a ninja with superhuman abilities who is captured during an assassination attempt and sentenced to death. Fortunately, multiple attempts at taking his life fail, so the ruling shogunate offers him a deal instead: travel to a newly discovered realm called Shinsenkyo along with his executioner, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, and bring back the elixir of life in order to be granted a full pardon.

With literally millions of copies as of August 2020, it seemed like only a matter of time before this series would get an adaptation at some point. I’m actually rather glad that the production committee waited until the series concluded before they announced the anime since the last thing the world needs is another unsatisfying, open anime ending.
