Last year, the anime reboot of Fruits Basket recaptured the hearts and minds of fans all over the world as we remembered just how much of a pure cinnamon roll Tohru Honda is. Ever since the first season ended, however, we’ve been left with a Tohru shaped hole in our hearts that nothing else can fill. Luckily, I have news for everyone today which will fill everyone’s hearts with joy and excitement.
According to new reports which accompanied the latest key visual, we can now confirm that the second season of Fruits Basket will air starting April 6th, 2020. To coincide with this news, Funimation posted a message from the original author alongside their new season simulcast announcement which reads:
Congratulations on the broadcast of the second season of the anime, Fruits Basket (2019). I appreciate all of those who are part of its production for their continued involvement from the first season, and I’m very happy that I can observe as the title reaches many viewers.
To tell the truth, even though I wrote the original story, there are often details that I’ve forgotten (It has been more than ten years since I completed the series). That’s why I’m brought to tears when confirming the scenario, and I wonder, “Who wrote such a painful story? It was me.” This keeps happening, so I think I might dehydrate myself from fluid loss if I watch with the addition of video, voices, and music. I’m a little worried about that.
The characters in the second season have lost their way, but it’s because they are lost that they can make the most out of it and struggle to search for the right path. I hope everyone will watch over them until they find their way. It would give me the utmost joy if everyone will love them as they search. I look forward to watching as a viewer myself.

Originally a manga series that ran from 1998 to 2006 in Hana to Yume magazine, the series was adapted into a 26 episode anime in 2001 which only partially followed the source material and led to the author disliking the adaptation. In November 2018, a brand new anime adaptation was announced which would feature an entirely new cast and crew and would follow the story in the source material much more faithfully. The new adaptation began airing in the spring 2019 season and has become a much-beloved title praised by many fans throughout its run for its emotional twists and turns.
Both Crunchyroll and Funimation streamed the new series as it aired, with Crunchyroll describing the story of Fruits Basket as:
Tohru Honda thought her life was headed for misfortune when a family tragedy left her living in a tent. When her small home is discovered by the mysterious Soma clan, she suddenly finds herself living with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Soma. But she quickly learns their family has a bizarre secret of their own: when hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Zodiac!
