Fans who pay attention to the news have known for a while now that famed writer Gen Urobuchi has been working on something new. We just didn’t know what exactly.
On September 25th, an announcement hit the news wires revealing that the next big project for Urobuchi is a 3D CG anime series that will premiere on YouTube this December, titled OBSOLETE. The series will feature Hiroki Yamada and Seiichi Shirato as directors. Studio Buemon will produce the animation.
Along with the teaser image, an English subtitled 86-second trailer was released:
According to the trailer, the story takes place in a not so distant future where aliens appear on Earth. They do not wish to trade in any sort of culture or politics, they merely want to trade for Earth’s limestone and, in exchange, they will offer up special consciousness operated mecha which can be used in a variety of different ways. This, naturally, leads humans to use them for warfare purposes.
The series will be made available on the Bandai Namco YouTube channel for paid subscribers at first before being made available to free users at a later date.
Gen Urobuchi burst onto the writing scene as a visual novel author way back in 2000. Over the years he amassed quite the record for interesting and compelling storytelling with Phantom of Inferno, Deus Machina Demonbane, Saya no Uta, and many others. It wasn’t until 2011 when fans around the world really took notice of him, however, when he penned the scripts for both Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero. Since that time, Urobuchi has become a very successful and highly sought after writer for a variety of different mediums and has won the ‘Best Screenplay’ award from Newtype twice (2011 and 2015) along with the same award from the Tokyo Anime Awards (2012).
Will OBSOLETE end up being yet another hit title for the master of intense drama? We’ll find out this December!
