What’s the Story of Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister?
Poor Uryuu Kamihate has had a hard life, growing up in an orphanage after the death of his mother. As he studies to enter Kyoto University’s prestigious medical school, he finally finds a place to live: the Amagami shrine. This is a famous Shinto shrine in Kyoto, and three beautiful daughters work there as Shrine Maidens.
Uryuu gets off to a rocky start with the three girls when he accidentally gets into the usual sexy situations with each girl. But more than that, he doesn’t believe kami gods exist and are listening to the prayers of human beings. He believes there’s always a logical explanation for things that happen in the real world. Things get even more complex when the head of the shrine declares that Uryuu must choose one of the three Amagami daughters to marry or leave the shrine.
If Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister has a bit of a Quintessential Quintuplets vibe, this is because the manga is by Marcey Naito, who worked as an assistant on that manga. There’s even an official collaboration between the two series.

Let’s Get to Know the Amagami Sisters!
Since we can’t possibly enjoy a harem anime without knowing the characters, let’s meet them now!
The oldest girl is Yae Amagami, age 20, in her second year of university. Yae is busty and a bit clumsy. She likes to act mature because she’s the oldest of the three sisters, yet has a childish side. She’s also a bit of a slob, which drives the perfectionist Uryuu crazy. Her blood type is B, the blood type of sloppy but creative people.

Then there’s Asahi, the youngest girl at age 15. She’s athletic and on her school’s track and field team. She’s self-conscious about her small breasts. She uses uchi as her first-person pronoun, which is very Tomboy-ish and cute. Her blood type is O, the blood type of optimistic and competitive people.
Finally, we have Yuna, the middle daughter, who is 17. She takes pride in her work as a Shrine Maiden and takes Uryuu to task for not believing that kami (Shinto gods) can intercede on behalf of humans. She has blood type A, which is the blood type of highly organized people.
What Makes a Good Harem Anime?
What elements make a good harem anime? Let’s explore a few!
- Naturally, we want a good mix of love interests that appeal to us for different reasons. Fans should be able to root for “Team Yae” or “Team Asahi” in memes.
- There should be tension about which girl the main character might choose. If the story always resets at the end of each episode, that can be a letdown for fans.
- Fans want story progress and the idea that we’ll finally be rewarded with a resolution to the story.
- Finally, we want some clever fan service to help us connect with the characters. Hey, don’t judge me!
Can Amagami Sister Measure Up to the Competition?
It’s always nice to have a new harem anime to enjoy with a new anime season. But does Amagami-san Chi No Enmusubi have what it takes to hold a candle to the genuinely excellent harem series like Bokuben, The Quintessential Quintuplets, Haganai or Amagami SS? I’m not so sure.
The animation by Studio Drive, which brought us Konosuba, is undoubtedly enjoyable. The visuals are gorgeous, and I like all the characters. If anything, the character designs and animation feel too “safe” to make an impression on fans. I was also disappointed to see almost no “Rule 34” art on the image boards I frequent. This makes me wonder if the show is really hitting with fans as other harem anime have?
