One of the fun things about living in Japan is enjoying the TV commercials here, like a popular commercial for a cockroach spray called Gokiburi Freezing Jet, which freezes bugs without using insecticides. The commercial features “Yuki-Onna” (Snow Woman), a traditional Japanese ghost who breathes cold death on insects. One of the most successful marketing campaigns in recent history has to be Softbank’s commercials about a white dog called Otousan (Father), his Japanese wife and daughter, and his (for some reason) black American son, who get together as a family and expound about the benefits of Softbank’s family discount packages. The series regularly features famous foreign stars like Quentin Tarantino and Tommy Lee Jones, mainly because Softbank owner Masayoshi Son is a well-known mii-haa, a Japanese word for someone who loves meeting famous people. If you think that little dog is cute, you might be interested in the new Otousan white dog mask we posted to the site today.
Japanese TV commercials are always fun.
