You might know the 2006 film Idiocracy, a science fiction comedy about two people from the present day who wake up 500 years in the future, in a dystopian world caused by the fact that intelligent people tend to have fewer children while the dumbest reproduce like crazy, leading to a society of idiots…which some fear might be coming true already. And you might know Shimoneta: A World Without Dirty Jokes, an anime about a future in which all adult content and ideas are censored “for the good and purity of society.” It’s a fun show…but it’s not supposed to be a documentary about the current day.
This week Tumblr announced that they’d soon start blocking adult content and hiding existing adult posts as “private.” While I’ve been expecting this move a long time, it is an unfortunate one. In addition to more porn than you or I could ever look at in several lifetimes, Tumblr is home to many awesome and weird fandoms that often involve NSFW art, perhaps making it the Internet version of Portland, Oregon.
So Tumblr now joins YouTube, Switch, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, the iOS App Store, Google Play, and (on and off again) Steam as platforms that are hostile to NSFW content. Though users will generally adapt, migrating their content to other platforms, paradigm shifts like these can affect companies like J-List and JAST USA. The move to centralized software distribution means the policies of a few companies limit what games you can play, and might make it harder for us to publish some 18+ games. The new JAST BLUE line of boy’s love games by Nitroplus + Chiral are being published with the help of several dedicated fans who are active parts of the Tumblr BL scene, whose support we need in order to make the games successful. If those fans splinter or go elsewhere, it will not be a good thing for anyone.
One thing is for sure: J-List and JAST USA will not allow censorship to make anime and related pop culture any less fun for us. We urge you to follow us on Twitter (the “last best hope” for social media) and engage with us there. We promise to always offer great uncensored visual novels in both shrinkwrapped package form and convenient instant download for everyone.
