Ah, wholesome anime. We all love them, although we all might have slightly different definitions of what “wholesome” means. I asked J-List customers to share their favorite wholesome anime series, and this is the list we came up with!
What’s Your favorite Wholesome Anime Series?
You never know what someone will consider to be a “wholesome anime.” It might involve cute creatures who live in the forest that only children can see, or adorable stories out of Japanese folklore. Or they might involve two people who love each other very much, who are able to be together in a sexual way…though this might not always follow society’s rules.
First, there’s Yoguga no Sora, a wholesome (?) anime about twins Haruka and Sora, who are extremely close. That’s a good thing, right?
The show is a rare one that explores themes of incest in anime. Along with the classic Koi Kaze, it’s one of the few shows not to blunt the drama by making the characters not blood-related.
Another wholesome anime to delight you should totally watch is Made in Abyss, the legendary adventure anime which follows Riko as she searches the mysterious Abyss for her mother, with her robot friend Reg. It really is wholesome, but there’s plenty of violence and some off-color jokes, too.
What’s so good about Made in Abyss? Read my blog post here!
There’s nothing more wholesome than a cute fox demi-god who’s here to pamper us, in repayment of a time when his ancestor cared for her in time of need. And since she’s 800 years old and came of age long ago, you can lay your hands on her, legally speaking!
There’s no more wholesome anime than the story of Skilled Teaser Takagi, who can’t stop herself from trolling poor Nishikata, who is her crush. The best part is they’re fated to be together and have a daughter together.
You never know when a quiet, under-the-radar show will become a huge hit with fans because of its relaxing story. Flying Witch was such an anime, though some of us were showing up because of the sexy tanned sister Akane.
Another relaxing and wholesome anime is Yuru Camp🏕, a slice-of-life show about girls enjoying relaxing camping in the winter. And having tons of lesbian sex in tents, according to fans.
An anime about delicious things to eat, by which I mean traditional dagashi candy from Japan’s Showa Period. What did you think I meant?
One of the most wholesome anime to come out of Japan was K-On!, the story of five members of a high school light music club who realize their dream of making music together. And exploring a neverending world of lesbian sex, if you sample the fanart on the image boards out there.
Another anime with a fun and laid-back story was Little Witch Academia, which was much improved when fans decided that the haughty Diane needed to be in a relationship with Akko. The ship was known as “Diakko,” and it was glorious.
Finally, with Christmas approaching, why not why check out some fun Christmas specials? This is Oni Chihi.
We’ve got a blog post with the best Christmas anime episodes to re-watch this holiday season. Read it here!
Thanks for reading this post exploring the most wholesome anime series, even if they might not be considered that way by everyone. Got any more fun anime that should be on this list? Post them below, or reply to us on Twitter!
