Would you like to enter an isekai world inside a video game? Would you like to go on quests and fight monsters and win treasure? Would you like your clingy mother who’s emotionally dependent on you in unhealthy ways to come along on your journey? That’s the premise behind Okaa-san Online, aka Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki Desu ka?, or Do You Like Your Mom? Her Normal Attack is Two Attacks at Full Power. It’s the latest Sword Art Online-derived anime to explore the now-familiar themes of a gaming otaku who finds himself living inside a video game world, though with a MILF-tastic twist thanks to his sexy mom.
It can be so hard for anime studios to make their series stand out from the crowd. With something 75-100 anime series airing in each cour, there are far more shows available than even the most dedicated fan could reasonably watch. With multiple offerings from each genre to choose from, it can be all too easy for a show to slip below fans’ collective radars, leading to a financial loss.
What can a studio do to make their anime stand out from the herd? There are plenty of ideas, including
- Load the cast with A-list voice actors like Hanazawa Kana, but try not to blow the entire show’s budget on seiyu, or this might happen.
- Add sexy fanservice, either throughout the entire show or tactically, limited to the first episode only, where it can get fans’ attention and get the dopamine flowing.
- Shockingly kill (or worse) a character early in the series, letting viewers know the writers aren’t giving us yet another milquetoast story we’ve seen a dozen times before.
- Announce the next season while the current one is still airing, sending a signal that the studios are solidly behind the project and that fans won’t be betrayed if they show loyalty. We hate that.
Another action anime studios can take to show fans that they stand 100% behind a new series is to commission figures right away, rather than six or 12 months after the final episode has aired. This lets fans know that there’s something special about the show, and they should support it. Just as happened when a figure for Interviews with Monster Girls appeared before the show even began its run, the early launching of this Mamako-san figure is a real treat for fans of the Okaa-san Online MILF anime, letting fans know we’ve got a lot to look forward from this fun show.
