The current anime season has turned out to be a surprisingly good one, filled with a wide variety of entertaining series to hold our attention during these crazy times. One of the more enjoyable series has been the “sleeper” hit (sorry) Maoujou de Oyasumi, or Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is Adorable
The concept of Maoujou de Oyasumi ridiculously simple: a demon lord has kidnapped Princess Syalis and is holding her in his castle. He expects her to cry and lament her captivity, but she’s secretly happy to be able to get some much-needed rest away from her official duties as princess. The only problem is, her living quarters in the castle leave much to be desired, so in each episode she works hard to find a way to improve things, creating fluffy pillows using the fur of the demons holding her captive, sewing some curtains to keep the light out, and befriending a harpy to use her feathers as a warm blanket.
It’s basically a slice-of-life about a sleepy princess who just wants to get some shuteye, while the demons holding her captive, and a band of heroes trying to rescue her, get in her way. A big part of the charm is how the kuudere princess, who usually ignores the various minions of the Demon Castle unless she can use them to get more effective sleep, quips sharp tsukkomi (lit. poking, butting in) lines at the boke (lit. slow-witted, airheaded) situations the other characters have set up.
When I first started Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, the simplicity of the story — a cute girl going on “quests” in order to achieve the perfect night’s sleep — made me assume that the anime would be one of the shorter episode formats that have become a thing in recent years. I was surprised to see the episodes are all full length, with stories that were so cute and charming, that the story never drags.
Otakus Need More Sleep
Anime fans like to make jokes about how little sleep they get, but hopefully, most of that is just making self-effacing jokes as part of their online personas. Back when I was founding J-List and growing at a rapid pace, I was so busy I would limit my sleep to allow for more hours of work. At 4.5 hours of sleep a night I started getting health problems like twitching eyes and hearing ringing in my ears, so I raised my target to 5.5 hours, until the issues went away. These days I’m much more careful about ensuring I get 7-8 hours of sleep a night since it’s so important to maintaining a healthy mind and body.
So everyone, do like the sleepy princess and try to get some pleasant sleep tonight!
